There was little In the stock market yes
terday that sluiild Influence opinion one
way or another as to the probable pre
vailing tendency of prices during the
corning montli3 lhe beom of the day
before started so auspiciously did not
continue and Instead there wire reces
sions all over the list not serious in ex
ttnt bt t sufficient perhaps to indicate
that the Insiders are not ready to com

vas Ik ter thun before the Wednesdays
upward movement began but showed net
los cs from the high prices at Wednes
day s close There -were not a few con
fid lit people on Wednesday that talked
of a boom during the remainder of this
month These people yesterday became
In ai if Ii again The one extreme of opln
lnu In us unwarranted as the other Care
ful mark t critics express the idea that
while money conditions are in the least
uncertain there Is no reason to look for
a big market but tliat later In the year
perhaps next month there Is likely to be
an Important advance Thev say that
business conditions are growing better In
stead of less attractive as waa predicted
by the pessimists and they point again
to tli wry evident fact that the big
file mut wish to sell out Korne of th ir
it iv y holdings of stocks during the com
ing winter
The Immediate cause of the declines yes
terday vvas heavv selling of stnckr bought
at re cent low prices to realize profits
The reason of this selling was perhaps
the failure of any confirmation of the
recent railway deal rumors Indirectiv
the decllrfe was due to the fact that the
Insiders did not buy stocks and did not
try to boom prices The oons rvatiie ele
ment in thtt street did not expect confir
mation of the railway deals at this time
The big people do not mate markets In
this way There is every- reason to be
lieve thot there will be announcements
to mike in this line later but they are
not Ukelv to lie given to the public until
prices nre higher and until money Is eas
ier

It is a conservative stitemcnt of the
facts as far as the are known that
I rogress has been made toward plans lor
n adjustment of the Northern Pacific
securities und of tne rallwav situation
in general en a basis in which the inter
ests of all pirtics including bt Paul and
Union Pacific will be subserved lhls is
as much as can be slid with knowledg
As to the nature of the plans the public
is vet tnllreiv uninformed and mmurs
and nevvsr pcr statements are very much
more thin likely to be- gutsseB pure and
simple It mav be said lurthci however
that there Is a probability that some of
the questions under consideration will be
left to ariiitiation Jin ilorgan will not
be in Jse lent for several ujjs
The most interesting gossip jesterday
was perhaps that regarding the Chicago
Great Western The stock continued
strong on account of the talk regarding
the compauv but it did not advance be
joiid the level of the previous day The
most positive story of the J was that
the liarriman Interests have made a pro
posal to the Great Western to buy the
system It vvas said by the people that
put out this story that the offer vvas equal
to the terms proposi d lie President Stiek
ney for the sale of the line some time ago
and that In all probability it will be ac
cepted Other rumors were not so posi
tive but leaned to the theory that the
llarrimans arc the bidders for the prop
erty It was also said that these people
have been among the chef bujers of the
stock recently The liarriman interest
will be benetited relatively in a most
Important way If it acquires the system
wmch is a large factor In the Western
rallwav situation generally
The Industrial securities came in for
more than their usual share of gossip
estcrda and they were more active
than thev have been for several daj s
past Tor the most part they were weak
The United States Steel securities both
showed evidences -of heavy realizing all
day and at the close were off fractlonallj
from the Wednesday elose In this case
the bear talk Is of British compttiton
It is said by one bear authority that the
export wire business of the trust Is fall
ing olf rapidly The same authority states
that there has been an attempt to or
ganize n gigantic steel trust In Great Brit
ain only less large than the United States
cnnpanv with a capital of SSjO OOOOOrt As
agilnst these stories 41 is said that ths
alleged British consolidation hns In rx
ality been given up ns impracticable and
that at present there is no prospect of
such a combine except of a few of the
smaller concerns and with a much small
er capitalization It Ms also said that
while the export wire business has fallen
off the United States Steel Company does
not object to this but is in reality doing
so much business rn this side that it can
not fill its expert orders The Iron
Age makes the prediction tint the rail
business of the trust during the coming
ear will lie the largest on record
Another Item of Interest to the Steel
Trust and to the Colorado Fuel and Iron
Company as well Js the statement that
Mr Gates is again buying up the stock
of the latter company and very certain
of obtaining control It is added by the
people that put out this story that the
company will be turned over to the Steel
Trust as soon as It is landed by Mr
Gates The Gates people were very bul
lish In their talk of the steck J estenlay
and Its price atlvanced sharply This
may make some people skeptical as to the
bona fides of the news as Mr Gates has
told stories of this kind before for the
simple purpose of boosting his stocks and
being able to sell out of them
41 I The weakest stock on the list yesterday
i was probably People s Gas which tumbled
J all day in a most discouraging way and
1U closed at the bottom below 105 The
7 i story put out to account for the tumble
in the stock was that the Illinois Supreme

court will soon hand down a decision
Inimical to Illinois corporations In een
eral There no particular reason for
believing that the story has any basis In
fact
There was much tnik xesterday of the
probability that there will be a cut In
the price of copper In the Immediate fu
ture for the purpose of reducing the
storks of the Amalgamated Company
Officers of the company said that there
was nothing in the story but it was ac
companied by heavy selling of the stock
and was believed by the street generally
He fore the close the stock recovered its
