NEW iORK Nov 21 Certain quarters
of the stock market today showed aggres
tivc strength while price movements it
the general list were limited and irregu
lar The trading was not in larcc iol
iae hut interest was quite well diversi
fied
At the opening of business a icrj irreg
ular tone was displayed and soon after
the orcning pricts receded quite sh rplv
particular In the instances of St Paul
nnd Union Pacific With the course of
the morning however the Vandcrbilt
group of stocks developed conspicuous
strength and actlvltv and it was plainlj
owing to the movement in this quarter
that the general recovery in prices en
sued
Illne In I like Sluirc
On very light transactions there was a
spirited rise in Lake Shore stock a move
ment which had been foreshadowed In the
quotations during the last few ila No
definite explanation could be obtained
The dividends on the Vandcrbilt stocks
will be acted upon next month and as re
gards the movement in Lake Shore there
was a divergence of opnion as to whether
it foreshadowed an advance in the rate of
dividend or whether it was ahead of a
lump distribution of the companys ur
plus In either event New York Central
would of ccirsc he the chief bencficiarj
as the holder of more than M per cent of
Lake Shore stock
Less was heard today of the rumored
adjustment of the relations between the
Vandcrbilt corporations but C C C und
t Louis Canada Southern and the
Nickel Plato stocks were decidedly
strong Toward raiddaj the local traction
shares developed increasing cctivitj with
a rarticuiarl rapid advance showing in
Manhattan Railway
Traction Humor
The movement in the latter stock was
attended by statements that close rela
tiens between the Manhattan and the
Metropolitan street railway were being
formulated and most cf these reports
were along the lines that the Metropoli
tan would guarantee dividends on Man
hattan Railway on an initial scale of 4
per cent to be increased subsequently to
6 por c nt and finally to 5 per cent
There were again tairly large dealings
in the anthracite coal stocks with further
substantial gains rppearlng in the higher
priced shares of this group
s already noted both St Paul and
Vnlcu Pacific ere sharply depressed n
the earlv dealings but subsequently boti
stocks found better support than they
have shown In a number of das Little
further attention appeared to be paid to
the apparent increase in disaffcrton in
the Northwestern States toward the for
roatlou of the Nonhern Securities Com

Tew movements cf interest appeared
among citner the industrial steaks or the
specialties Amalgamated Copper 4meri

weak but nothing further vws brought
out in conrection wLh the movements in
these stocks It was estimated that the J
taxation of the property of the Peoples

ruling of the Illinois Supreme Court
rculd require a sum equal to 21 3 per
rent of the coinpanvs net earnings an
amount which woulJ of course irturil
involve a reduction in the dividend rate
but probablv ihc last word has not been
said even as jet iu In- matter
There was a particularly sharp advance
In Consolidated Gas and American Car
and Poundrj American Smelting and
Tenneaete Coal and Iron continued steadv
The inonev market was comparatively
easy throughout the day wth exceedms
ly large offerings on call around 4V per

Sterling exchange was firm at a slight
decline from yesterdajs level and this
together with the further reduction in the

The anderbilt securities led i sharp
advance in the -lock market vcoterdiy
afternoon There Ind betn a morning of
stagnation with prices simply holding
their own and with the profS3ioml3
alone doing the small amount of business
transacted The public and the lirge in
terests teemed to be waiting for easier
moncv conditions or something more
definite regarding tiie railway situation
in the Northwest
With little warning a boom began li
Xew iorlc Central that Jumped it from
lf3 to 1C8 and a fraction the bujirg being
cf the most important Uiaracter Other
Vanderbllt stocks follovtd tht lead of
Central aud n a short time the entire
market was clnnglng color from dullness
to sprightl buoyancy The close of the
lay was at near the best level and the
outlook for an active nnd advancing mar
ket was much better than it had been at
an tin c during the week
llfiiiiptiltitfiiii lij Iiisitleri
Such a change of tone is alnajs the re
sult of manipulation of course Tho
public docs not ever come into the market
together after keeping awaj for two or
three dass and when there has been no
news to cause sudden enthusiasm The
public docs not act in concert It follows
the leaders alw ys The room traders
vej seldom work together except when
some Important announcement has been
made
The Important rcople the big pool
manipulators working for tLemscles or
for the insiders are alcne able to pro
duce results on a large scale in a short
time s ch as the boom of vestcrda aft
ernoon
The interesting question regarding yes
terdays boom is of course what is the
Indention of the big interests in making
the spurt Some rcople said stcrdaj
that thrj are simplj taking up one group
of stocks after another in order to hold
the market up vhile the sell stoi s An
other view Is that they consider condi
tions now sjlHclenlly good for nn im
portant advance ana arc beginning a bull
tajipaign in earnest
Ilie Prosperity rRlinieiitK
Lcoked at frora the outside the argu
ncnts all seem to be in favor of tho
theory that the market will improve dur
ing the comins winter whatever mi bo
its immediate course Business eruditions
continue good lut more than that they
continuo to improve Railwa earnings
are larger this month than thev were
lat and hence larger than tre ever
were Lefore
As Mr Morgan is reported to lave said
the ether dav the countr has an abun
dance of gold if not almost a surcrabun
anee Tne iron and coal trades are
booming and the reports do not saggest
that there will be ruy diminution in their
preterit throughout ret car The
same activit 5 noted in nearly all lines
of buMcess
And in addition to this excellent argu
ment there Is the other that Mr Morgan
and his friends anu the Ilarrlmins and
their friends have a vast block of securi
tios new and old that they must dis
tribute some da and the sooner tl e bet
ter of course These securities can not
be aold to the public in a day or a week
and thg cannot be sold in a ear unless
the market is broad and active bccaue
the public will ndt buv in any other kind
of market

Tle old rumors vcre renewed regarding
the Vandcrbilt plans but the street herd
little new regarding them The stor was
told again that there is to be a Vander
bllt holding companv similar to the Penn
slvania compan or to tie Xoithern Se
curities Company and that the Xcvv iork
Central will benefit b the new deal ma
teriall
Another class of rumors had to do vlth
the heavy earnings of the Iakc Shore aud
the possililit that tho dividend of the
company may lie Increased natcrfally or
the surplus be divided In some other way
It Is bejond dispute as has been pointeJ
out Inrctoforc In this column that the
Lake Shore surplus must lie considered a
direct asfcet and one of immense value to
the New ork Central
The entire surplus ccild be given to the
Central stockholders before the end of the
present vear if such a plan were desired
Kut even while the money continues in
the name of the Lake Shore it makes
ever shire of Central stock so much
more valuable intrinsically

The boom in the one stocl to the
neglect of the others somewhat dampens
the ardor of the theorists that have been
talking of a combination of the Ncv iork
traction companies It gives added weight
on tLe other hind to the talk of the largo
earnings cf the Manhattan and the out

Rumors of important developments In
Heading were heard In many quarters
esterday afternoon and persistent hcav
buying of the sccuiltles of the company
disposed the street to credit thein In a
measure at least Tho statement of
Vednesdiy that control of the Lehigh
Vallc has been secured was reiterated
Another story was that the Jersey Cen
tral dividend Is to be Increased which
would adl materially to the revenues of
the Heading of course
The prosper of the Reading company
is sufficient to explain much strength in
ts securities however It is said that
the October statement of the company
will show a handsome increase over tl at
of last cnr and friend of the company
say that a dividend on the common stock
Is amorfr the possibilities of next ear
The other roal securities were all strong
and all clofed practically at the Lest
