KEff YORK Aug 20 Over a score
of stocks established new high records
today and the volume of business ex
panded to proportions larger than at
any time within about a month With
the exception of the virtual doubling of
the aggregate of dealings the move
ment of the market presented exactly
similar characteristics to that of yester
day That is to say the market sus
tained a large- amount of profit taking
London was an early buyer and then a
seller the distribution of the business
covered a great many of the lower and
medium priced specialties and at the
close the majority of the list left off
with net gains
Advance Unexplained
Similarly also a number of the Im
provements in prices were unexplained
Doubtless part of the gains were es
tablished at the expense of persons
mainly professional traders who have
recently been counting with some confi
dence upon a lower level of values as
the result of expected firmer rates for
money
As a matter of fact the feature of the
money market again today was fairly
abundant offerings on call by both trust
companies and by the local banks for
account of their country correspond
ents especially at the West and In New
England TheseoSTerinss resulted in an
extreme decline In call rales of li per
cent from the average figure prevalllag
on Tuesday The ruling rate today was
4 per cent
The time money market also was a
shade lower The movement of Interior
funds obviously might change when
least expected bet as stated the drift
Is still toward Xcw York
The Ccuntiy Surplus
Incidentally the surplus of money
from the country has teen reflected In
a demand almost entirely confined to
out-of-town Interests for prime mercan
tile paper In the last week or so that
has kept that market on a parity with
the time money market whereas a sharp
rise on discount figures had been ex
pected
The banks continue to gain from the
subtrcasury notwithstanding yester
days gold withdrawal for export partly
on account of payments for gold
domestic sources deposited at Pacific
coast points The sterling exchange
market was slightly firmer A continued
advance in the grain markets was at
tributed logically to the technical con
dition of these markets after the de
clines following the publication of the
Government crop lVport indicating a
record breaking crop of corn and large
yields of other staple cereals Sentiment
was favorably influenced by the return
to this city of a prominent financier who
Is popularly depended upon to adjust a
number of vitally Important railway
combinations and business undertakings
London Market Strengthened
The London market for American
railway shares was strengthened by the
current reports of the approaching col
lapse of the anthracite coal strike and
the higher range of quotations cabled
spire an upward Impetus to the local
market The transactions here for
foreign account were larger than for
come time past
Soufhern Hallway was the leader In
extent of trading In the railway list and
It established a net gain of a point
Texas and Pacific came next and on
Bales of nearly 53000 shares at a slight
concession from the best figure It closed
nearly 2 points high Third place was oc
cupied Jointly by Southern Pacific and
Denver and Hlo Grande common
The last mentioned stock was more
extensively dealt In than for a long
time past and It enjoyed an Improve
ment of 4U Per cent The common stock
gained about half ar much The im
provement In the shares was explained
by reports that important Interests
tome of them Identified with the prop
erty have been accumulating them for
eome time past with a view to perma
nent Investment
The earnings of the road submitted
today for the second week of Augus
showed a falrlj substantial increase In
the gross figures
Western Unions Gain
In the specialties Western Inlon dis
played a noteworthy Increase In the
volume of trading and closed at a net
din of US per cent at the highest
figure of the day The advance In the
stock was attended by furthei sugges
tions oj a possible agreement with the
companys most Important competltqr
t commanded a premium for use and
after the close rumors were current
that n firm that has been lending a good
deal of the utock had called It in
It Is claimed that there Is less West
ern Union In Wall Street held In mar
Kin thnn over before and that a con
fident short Interest has beet forming
ever snro the reported misunderstand
lag between the controlling Interest-
In lie property and the Pennsylvania
Ilallrosd
In the Industrial shares Colorado Fuel
and Iron held the renter of the stag
and sustained an extreme decline of
points en transactions of nearly 35000
dare The act loss was 5z per cent
he cello was attributed to adherents
of the dcfeatcil Interest that has been
contesting the control of the property
United States Steel common was more
extensively dealt In than for a Ions
time past and with the preferred re
corded a fractional net Improvement
Tennessee Coal and Iron was fairly
active and In sympathy with the other
iron and steel issues advanced a point
The railway bond market showed a
moderate increase in activity and the
tone wac firm support appearing for
the first lime recently In Central of
Geornia first and second Incomes
In the curb market dealings were con
riderably more active and some ma
terial advances in prices occurred The
especially strong features were North
ern Securities and Otis Elevator com
mon while the Seaboard issues after
early advances developed considerable
weakness
The stock market closed firm at re
cessions from the best prices

CHICAGO Aug 20 Wheat rangci
hlKher with the trade moderate hut
shonlnR an expanding tendency len
cral rains In the Northwest yesterday
continued poor Kradlni of current re

vance The buying of the December in
particular was of the very best sort
The short interest In that month as

cars with three contract Shipments
for tomorrow 40 cars In the cash
trade it is estimated that fully 1000000
bushels per week will be needed for
several wecks to come Cash corn was
very firm with No 3 selling at 3 to
4c over the September price
Oats The market was an unusually
broad affair and prices higher The
serious condition of the crop in Iowa
the poor grading of the new grain and
the very small contract stock here
were the prominent Influences Cash
oats were a full cent higher and No
3 white sold lc to 2c over September
Provisions were higher all around
There was an advance of 5c to 10c In
hogs at the yards and some Improve
ment In the Southern cash trade
Packers and the local bull interests
were on the buying side and were
mainly taking September and October
