the products of the convicts at that
prison settlement It Was the report
that OBriens friends in New York
and London bad a fast yacht in wait
ing and that that was to pick him up
and hasten to America with him
There Is not the least doubt but that
such a plan was afoot and that a
yacht hovered about not TU great dis
tance from the French prison Neither
is there any doubt about the efforts I
to liberate OBrien But these efforts
proved futile I

OBrien robbed the cashier of an ex
press company of 1000 in iRe house
one night and had to flee to Canada
He came back later and became known
as the Grey womans husband In 1889
he fleeced Jdlm M Peck an Albany
man out of 10000 by the confidence
game and was arrested two years
later while living with tie Grey wo
man in this city
The bunco man skipped his bail of
6000 and fled to Europe where he
lived in style He was captured in
Paris 9raus back and sentenced to
pressed by the sUite under the attor
neyGeneralship of Hon W B La
mar of Jefferson county who now rep
resents the third Florida district in
congress It is well to remember that
the persistent and faithful labor of
Hon SPasccfas senator from Flori
da in pressing the Indian war claims

The men who took charge of the
scheme were known as Dave Dihler
and Don Minchin One of these was
said to have been a noted crook not
known to the police of Cincinnati and
who is now living in Switzerland Both
were friends of OBrien That is cer
tain
The Utica Escape
They met the Grey woman in Troy
and then OBriens lawyers were in
duced to apply for a writ in Utica
that would necessitate the + prisoners
presence in that city while the mat
ter was being argued Two weks before
that Jas E Buck had been appointed a
keeper at the prison and it has al
ways been believed that he secured
the appointment through OBriens
court of impeachment In tho United
States When a man gets so far
from honesty as to spend 125 a day
for his board and then charge the
government up with 1000 he should
be sent back to Pennsylvania where
robbery of that kind can Sourish But
in the event of conviction by the sen
ate Judge Swayne will dfatiit his sal
ary for seven more months Mel

taken in a carriage to Norwich 30T
miles away where he caught a train
for this city and flea to Europe Once
afterward he was caught at Havre
but succeeded in getting away front
