BARS PRESENT HEAVY
WEIGHT CHAMPION
That veteran old war horse of the
prize ring Bob Fitzgimmins is on the
war path after the blooming scalps of
Jim Corbett Tommy Ryan and Jack
OBrien says the CourierJournal That
the veteran is honest in his declara
tion that he would be only too pleased
tomeet anyone of this trio cannot be
doubted when he agrees to rot 5000
as n evidence of sincerity and only
exacts from others that they do like
wise Barring Jeffries who is invin
cible in big class Ipitz has trimmed
them all and increasing age has not
shaken his confidence in his ability
to keep on rimming several fighters
who have been hurling challenges
him only to sidestep the issue when
it comes to putting up the money to
bind a match There might be those
who are sarcastic enough to1 charge
the old fighter with boasting oi his
show business in his interview rela
tive to meeting the aforementioned
scrappers but any one who knows
Fitz will take his statement at
face Value
ITItz is now close on to fortythree
years of age according to his own
figures though it is said that he ia
Several years older Jim Corbett Is
thirtyeight Tommy Ryan thirty five
and Jack OBrien twenty seven Fitz
Is in the aged class in years but he
is still there with the punch It
seems unreasonable however to be
lieve that he can keep up the pace he
has been accustomed make in the
ring He wants to tight twenty
rounds too Fritz could undoubtedly
go six rounds at a clip which wouMJ
make Corbett Ryan and OBrien hop
around at top speed but any one of
the three should be able to stand
a twentyround battle with the old
man Six rounds was enough for Fitz
to show OBrien that he was his mas
ter when they met at the ball park
in Philadelphia In one round Fritz
landed a left hook on OBriens jaw i
which made Jack look like a damp
ened cloth and in the next lie knock
ed him through the ropes the police
stopping the fight If Fitz should land
on Corbett or Ryan jnthe same men
ner they would probably take the
same route as OBrien The old vete
ran will not be lacking punching
ability should he go into the ring
though he might lose out in a sprini
match

AUTO BOA T RAG5
IN BISCAYNE BAY
TO BE HELD IN FEBRUARY WILL

EVENT EVER HELD
j
I
Miami Metropolis
If ready and willing efforts are pro
ductive of successful results as they
generally ae the residents of Miami
and the thousands of visitors from all
parts of the country and world who
will be in our midst will have the
pleasure and occasion of witnessing a
series of autoboat races on BIscayne
Bay during the early part of February
that will be second to no contest of
the kind ever held In the world
As is well known a series of car
nival of water sports has been arrang
ed to take place on Lake Worth Palm
Beach under the auspices of the Palm
Peach Power Boat Association from
February 1 to 4 inclusive after which
the schedule is for an endurance race
of the crafts from there via Miami
to Key West and Havana with prob
ably races at each of the latter places
By this arrangement Miami is cut out
of the contests but Mr Morgan man
ager of the races hag signified a de
sire to have races here and has Inter 1
ested Mr H W Merrill manager of
the Royal Palm Hotel and Mr John I
F Oliver president of the Seminole
Club and a number of jpther yachts
men and boating enthusiasts in the
project 1
These gentlemen have been laboring
quietly on the project and have work d
up more than ordinary enthusiasm
among the local and visiting yachts
men in the plan all of whom are de
sirous that a series of rues should
be held here and have promised to
lend all aid possIble towards securing
the same Mr Olive who Is an ardent
and enthusiastic worker at all times
and for all things that will tend to at
tract Invite and create interest In
Miami is now in New York and to
day wires the Metropolis from that
place as follows
Think we will get dales for the
autoboat races following the Palm
Beach events I
As Mr Olive is not an alarmist and
never divulges a plan until it is mod
erately certain of materializing all
the more credence c nbeput in the
probability of a series ° of such con
4ests being held here Jghls being the
case and as the Palm Beach races oc
cur during the first four days of Feb
ruary it is reasonably certain that the
contests here will occur during the
week beginning February 6 and clos
ing on the 11th 1
Substantial prizes will be given in
all of the events and now that the
project is about to materialize not
only every yachtsman on the bay but
every citizen of Miami should give it j

New York Jan 12ln an address
to the annual session of the Military

adier General A W Greely chief offi

latest developments in his field and
declared that in warfare of the future

control of mails the construction op

lines balloons and visual signalling
General Greely had some comments
to make on the preparedness of other
nations in respect to this branch of
the service declaring that the United
States had led them Germany he
said has been quick to take advantage
of our experiences reorganizing her
signal service after the civil war and
the SpanishAmerican war As to
Great Britain General Greely pointed
out that her service is sadly defec
tive
The Japanese he said have con
ducted their operations with a skill
heretofore unsurpassed in telegraph
ing and ballooning General Greely
gave the interestirj information that
not once was General Kuroki under I
fire in directing his celebrated flank
ing movements and that so perfect
were his telegraph lines that only I
once was connection with headquar
