Pitch Pine Market Conditions
Sawn Timber There has been an
advance and the market is buoyant
The market on the Gulf Is especially
Strong at this Lime and the demand
I is active Shipprsare buying freely
Manufacturers forcing values and
yet stocks are bought up on arrival
The bulk of arrivals Is on contracts
made some months ago Rivers are
high and t arrivals at the ports rep
t resent the total stock The arrivals
I at ilobile consisted of 5000 pieces
I the city mills made 3200 pieces The
sales were 500 pieces 30 cu ft ay at
18c 3jOOO pieces 30 cu ft av p t
The bulk of the arrivals at Moss Point
is sold before the stock reaches the
t market Among the sales reported at
Moss Point were 250 pieces 27 = cu ti
av at 17c Hunter Benn Co > and
I shippers have options on nearly all of
the rafts now on the way down at
17 = 4c At Darien Ga the rivers are
very high and about 23000 pieces will
arrive This represents the seasons
stock The price I at Darien is 1450
to 1500 per 1000 sup ft on a basis
of 420 su gt The sawn timber mar
ket is now assured and the manufac
turer controls the situation Stocks
on the Gulf have been reduced 1000
pieces during the past week The
outward movement Is increasing Dur
ing the week Mobile shipped 5916098
1 ft The number of vessels loading on
i the gulf is large
I Logs The river mills are well sup
plied At Mobile 7000 arIved on the
market and 4000 came in to the mills
I At all points arrivals are heavy The
recent heavy rains which have brought
about this condition have interfered
I with the supply at the outoftown
mills the ground being too soft to
permit hauling
Hewn Arrivals at Mobile were 300
pieces Sales were 100 pieces 80 cu
ft av at 18ic and 100 pieces 110 cu
ft av at 19c The market is buoyant
Stocks at Moss Point Miss are about
3000 pieces
eThe small cut continues
The available cut has been sold 5
months in advance and it would be ad
I visable for shippers to be slow in mak
ing future sales The outward move
ment for a fortnight past has been
large
Heartface Floorings The urgent de
mand continues There has been no
increase in the cut Almost the en
tire future cut Is contracted and ship
pers ate unable to fill their require
ments
River Plate Demand is fair but
values are slow to advance Buyers
are placing orders at 12 while free
acknowledging that they could afforJ
to pay 1275 The situation is puz
zling Cuban schedules are selling at
12 to 13 while South American
schedules which is much more dif
ficult cutting are selling at 12 Even
buyers are expressing surprise at this
state of affairs There is no compari
son in the quality of lumber in South
American and Cuban schedules as the
former must be stacked from 60 to 90
days Business in the River Plate
country continues good and banks are
doing a thriving business and the rail
roads continue to make improvements
Shipments are decreasing from the
Gulf owing to the unsatisfied demand
of the interior markets
Cuba Demand is good bqt values
are unsatisfactory to the manufact
urer Shippers report an abundance
of business offering L M Moragues
Mobile reports having 6000000 It
sold Cargoes are being sold at 19 to
1950 Co i L The Interior demand has
curtailed shipments Several ship
pers who are also manufacturers have
rechartered their boats ata loss and
are sending their lumber Interior
Coastwise The demand continues
good anl buyers are Inclined to place
I
orders at a decided advance over pri
ces obtaining 60 days ago The Gulf
mills are incline to accept these I
orders whenever it is possible to fill
them within the desired time Orders
have been placed for 15000000 It
Owing to the crowded condition of
the lumber market present it Is use
less for buyers to try to Buy Savannah
merchantable schedules on the Gulf
Interior The demand Is urgent and
the mills are crowded We regret be I
ing unable to furnish material but we
are full up for GO to 90 days Is the
stereotyped reply to all inquiries The
car factories are the Heaviest buyers
During the week orders were placed
for 557 box cars 5 tank cars 22 pas
senger cars 4100 gondola cats 141
flats 100 coal coal cars 1150 hopper
cars 75 refrigerator cars a total of
6150 cars
The Pearl RiverDistrict The cut
of this District is scarcely 50 of the
mill capacity While toe big mills of
the H Weston LuMber Co Logtown
I Miss have been running regularly
two other large mills in the district
i have been shut down for 4 or 5
I months Thus the short cut on the
Gulf is in a measure explained How
I ever the idle mills are preparing to
start up April 1st The cut of prime I
and heartface of this section has been
notably small and even when the
above mentioned mills start up it is j
stated that one will decline to make j
prime There is marked improvement
in demand for both these grades
These mills have been shut down in
the face of an enormous demand for
i want of logs and now they have about
40000 in their booms South Amen
I
can business Is not active here but
the H Weston Lumber Co has all of
this editing that it cares to handle
This concern enjoys an especially
good local trade these sales last yearl
amounting to 1000000 ft the bulk ot
which was hauled away on wagons
This concern has a steady supply of
logs brought in to the mill over the
companys own road The surround
ing country is building up at a re
markable rate The Louisville Nash
ville Railroad affords excellent ser
vice and shippers in this section are
enabled to make prompt deliveries
having an abundant car supply at att
seasons As in all sections of file
Gulfs the log supply here is gradually I
decreasing and stumpage is increas
Ing In value almost daily The mills
I depending entirely upon the river for
a supply of logs run about six months
in the year
New Orleans Business with the ex
porters is good but shippers find dim
culty in getting stocks and values of
fered are too low to admit of much
business in pitch pine being closed
Trade in hardwoods IS good and
values fair Full list prices are being
offered for cypress but the mills are
hopelessly behind with their orders
The Illinois Central Railroad As a
large source of supply for New Orleans
shippers but there is a car shortage
on that line owing to the recent fire at
the docks here when 800 cars were
burned The freight market is dead
said Mr Arthur Page of the Kelly
Page Co I see nothing ahead but
a low range of values he continued
and in my opinion they will go lower
yet before they advance This voices
the opinion of all freight brokers and
tonnage is offering in abundance
There are now 94123 tons of steam
tonnage and 3150 tons sail tonnage in
port nd while general business Is ex
cellent the freight market is In a da
plorable condition There Is plenty

chheimer of Huga orchheimer with
offices at the various gulf ports and
Qermany Adam Stejnbrugge re
port anabundanceof inquiries but
values offered are top low and stock
are difficult to locate 1 The shippers
agree that values abroad are stiffening
and business implying The New
Orleans shippers are doing a heavy
business out of Gulfport Miss where
a fleet is npw loading
Texas Coast The interior and
Mexican market continue to absorb
the bulk 0C the cjit One of the
largest manufacturers m this section
says The interior market is so good
that we are considering the advlsa
bllity of witndrawing entirely from the
export business Prices we have been
receiving for some tipie i for yellow
pine finish and otiter uppers caused
us to discontinue the rranufacture of
primes and other high grade export
lumber We have some primes on
hand manufactured last year that we
are shipping out at present WJien
these are shipped we are through with
the prime business unless the interior
market should fall off to such an ex
tent that we would go back to primes
and this is decidedly unlikely This
leaves us inMhe export market to the
extent of sawn timbers only and uu
lest prices on these timbers advance
we will market our timbers in the ir
tenor We are not buying any new
export contracts and will not do so
until we have completed our present
ones which will be some time next
month The conditions of the market
at that time will determine whether
we desire to make future contracts or
cot We have been bothered a
little by car shortage owing to
bad weather our February cut was
down at least 33 If Shipments are I
likewuse curtailed An early
spring means that all mills will be
burdened with orders New
price lists have been Issued by the
lumber mills at Beaumont showing a
further advance the price of about
fifty cents per 1000 feet
Among the Mills The demand far
exceeds the output and the mills are
declining more orders than they are
accepting All of the mills are loaded
with orders and full values are in all
instances paid Interior values are far
above those of the export markets
hence the bulk of the cut is shipped
domestic The coastwise markets are
now the gull mills best customers
The log supply taken as a whole is
ample and ideal weather enables
the mills to make full time The cut
on the whole Is up to the capacity I
The mills running at Mobile are mak
ing coastwise stuff and sawn timber
but the Mobilecut is only about 60 7
of what it was in the past The Rose
Lumber Company Merrill Miss will
start up Monday Mr James Kirk
wood Clarke of Clarke Bros Darien
Ga is visiting Mobile The firm 31
noted among the largest shippers of
pitch pine and Is well known through
out Europe
Among the Shippers Business is
improving and valun oro stiffening
Unlike the mills some of the ship
pers have sold in some lines too far
ahead and It is now exceedingly dif
ficult to get stocks The J E North
