NOVEL AOVERTISING
How n Firm ot Architect Got Ita
Name on a Bnlldln r
l Close observation on the part of a
neW IJaper man In Boston several
years ago revealed a striking Device
employed by the firm of McKlm Mead
White the noted New Yorfarehl
teets of which Stanford White who
was murdered by Harry K Thaw In
New York recently was a member
r The device says the PIttsburg Gazette
Times was an acrostic of names fa
mous In history literature and art by
which the firms name was to be en
graved on the Boston Public library
As may be observed the arrangement
defied literature history and philoso
phy In arrangement and this was the
thing that attracted the luwspaper
mans attention The names were con
glomerated from all nations and ages
Into a seemingly neat ornamentation
for the fine building Beginning at the
top of a space to be devoted to names
famous in the world In various lines
were the following I
Moses
Cicero
Kalldasa
Isocrates
Milton
These names through their Initials
formed the first part of ° the acrostic
spelling plainly McKsm A slight
space appeared before the next list of
names which was
Mozart
Euclid
Aeschylus
Dante
The initials of these names brought
out the second name of the firm
Mead Another slight space and the
following names appeared
Wren
Herrick
Irving
Titian
Erasmus
Here was the name White also en
graveJ the whole device bringing out
the firm name of McKlm Mead
White In connection with the worlds
famed men It was iu 1S90 just before
the building was completed that tho
discovery was made and published
The list ot names was changed

COTTON LETTER
Pensacola Nov Liverpool opened
firm at six points advance this morning
contrary to expectations and continued
strong until after noon when under
heavy selling It weakened closing easy
three points down from the opening
Spot sales were reported at 8000 bales
at 686 for middling
In New York De ember opened at
1012 and January 1018 January advanc
ing during the first hour to 1023 later
selling down to 1007 and just prior
to the close the market was quiet but
steady three points above the low price
for the day
A large and wellposted New York
firm advises that immediate future of
markets depends on weather and move
ment and In their opinion the consump
tion will largely exceed last season and
consider a crop of 12500000 bales neces
sary but very unctftain
I The tendency has been to oversell the
market on this depression Just the same
I as It was overbought In the recent bull
ish excitement The market now has
had a break of a cent a pound with hard
ly more than a tenpoint reaction during
the progress of the decline and it Is only
reasonable to expect at least a moderate
upturn
Middling spots in New York are quoted
at 1040 ten points down from yester
days figure
Port receipts for today are estimated
at 55000 bales as against 53445 the cor

THE GIRL WITH SPIRIT
What She Looks For la the Man She
Would Marry
A girl with spirit nowadays does not
marry 8 man merely because she likes
him Love Itself Isnt enough Before
she asks herself Do L love him she
wants to settle certain questions in her
mind
For instance Is he congenial Whats
the use of affection asks the modern
girl If were to have nothing in com
mon to talk about and think about
after were married If our tastes and
ideas are so totally dissimilar that we
shall never understand each other or
agree then hes not the man for me
There must be some common bond of
between that
I Interest and sympathy us
wUl hold when caresses and endear
I ments wane
Next says the spirited moflern girl
I has he good breeding I dout mean
the vapid airs and graces of a society
polish but the true gentleness of heart
which makes him kind and courteous
by nature The instincts of a gentle
man may be born In the lowliest and
unless be has these he may some day
degenerate into a selfish boor
What are his morals asks the mod
em maid Can I trust him wholly If
they are flabby and wavering he will
never inspire my admiration and re
spect I should give him a clean life
and upright morals and I cannot see
why I should compromise by accepting
less from him
Also has he cleanbill of health
He owes it to me to be perfectly frank
about this
Is he a selfish man That is will he
demand the sacrifice of my Individual
Its Docs he want me to marry him
for myself or for my ministry upon his
material needs alone
And again asks the girl of spirit is
he the sort of man who will take me
into his confidence or will he be reti
cent and secretive about everything
assuming me incapable of understand
ing his affairs It would be wholly
Impossible for me to be happy unless
there was absolute trust and confidence
between us says this resolute girl
Will be recognize my right to an al
lowance she wonders That will be
very necessary
Other things nonessentials says
the modern girl of spirit But congen
iality good morals good breeding a
clean bill of health an unselfish inter
est in my welfare frankness and a
reasonable generositythese are real
essentials No matter bow much I
care for a man I shant marry him un
less he possesses these qualifications
