A man with whom I talked when ii

° You can say and say it truthful

other county in the state
Since seeing the land about Chipley
and making a more or less thorough I
examination of Washington county
lands I am inclined to believe that
ay informant told the truth
But before getting to that let us
see something concerning Washing

Above are two maps The one in the apper right hand coiner is a map Florida the shaded portion ooing West Florida The larger map is
West Florida and it shows the counties and the principal towns in West Florida 3
A great many people do not know definitely where West Florida is This map ought to explain its location and importance to everyone who is
interested
V Chipley and Washington county are indicated by the hand and index finger shown on the map

Vornothe Bounty seat is located
in the interior of the county on
Holmes creek Chipley Is the chief
lawn and is situated on the Louisville
and Nashville railroad in the north
ern part of the county contains a pop
ulation of nearly 1500 and Is a pro
gressive place There are in this coun
ty 165357 acres of land open to home
stead entry
Resources of the Soil
Washington county is rich in re
aoures of the soil Anything will
grow there The man itha town
lot can raise in his back yard garden
truck sufficient to do him the year
around X he has a vacant lot he can
make it pay good interest on the in
vestment by letting garden stuff grow
on it I say let it grow That Is
exactly what I mean Vegetables will
grow anywhere and at any time if
you but let them do it
Why I saw back yards and vacant
lots in Chipley no filled with water
hieion vines that it JookedT > rabtically
Impossible to walk through them with
out tramping on the vines and such
melons L never saw anywhere They
were not only big but the interiors
were ripe and red and sweet and
picked on an early Corning after one
of the cool nights for which this sec
tion of the country is so noted these
melons taste like they had been hung
In the cool depths of an Iowa or Illinois
well for a week
One of the best examples of what
can be done in Washington county
soil is illustrated in the case of Chas
E Wilson who performs the dual duty
of running the Washington County
Verdict of which he is editor and pro
prietor and of conducting a 30acre
farm two miles south of Chipley
Up until about 18 months ago Mr
Wilson was a Pensacola printer em
ployed on The Pensacola Journal
drawing his money every Saturday
n
night and throughhenecessitiesof
city life sitvndTgtitbCforethh xt
Saturday night rolleR around He
was energetic and industrious but he
realized as nearly every mart does
who stops to think that the prospect
of getting much ahead on a salary In
a city particularly where he has a
family to sunporf is pretty slim
Therefore Mr Wilson decided to
turn his attention to the soil He
went to Chipley purchased acres
of land secured at the same time a
position as printer on Washington
County Verdict of which he later be
came editor and proprietor and alter
nated ° his duties of printer and farmer
Chas E Wilsons Success
I Visited Mr Wilsons farm and
took dinner wlth him His farm Is
neither the largest nor the bests that
this section affords but I am writing
of it particularly becausp It shows
what a new man in the business can
do and how quick he can do it This
is Mr Wilsons second year on the
farm aruf sitting M tWfV rand3ot
