New York Offlce 404 Tribune Building. Chicago Offlce 303-167 Dearborn Street PENSACOLA. FLORIDA, WEDNESDAY MORNING, JANUARY 25. 1911. Mr. N.P.Bryan and j jhe Federal Income Tax. There are two great questions how (before the American people and with j which the federal congress has to deal. nOne is the matter of the direct election of United States senators and the other lis the .federal income tax. Mr. N. P. jBryan. Wee Mr. W. A. Blount, favors (the direct election of senators; but Mr. Bryan, unlike Mr. Blount, dodges the Issue involved in the income tax. Mr. Blount not only advocates an incoma tax. but he wants a graduated income tax and an inheritance tax, while Mr. Bryan's advertising matter states the .Jacksonville candidate's position as follows: J lie does not advocate a federal In come tax, because congress has already 'passed favorably upon that proposition 'and as senator he would have nothing to do with it. If Mr. Bryan is opposed.to an incomo rtax he could say so in much fewer word than the above, but if ho wants to dodge the question he ought to at least give a plausible reason. Tho etatcment that as United States sen- etor 'he would have nothing to do with if is an awful admission for a man who aspires to serve in the upper branch of congress. As a matter of fact, a United States fienator would have everything to do with it. In tho event that tho states ratify tho amendment, the senate can determine whether or not any tax shall Y,m levied and., if levied, how large it hall be. Or, while tho states have it Under consideration, congress may at any time reconsider the resolution sub mitting the amendment and It is neces- aary therefore to have friends of the policy in both houses of congress to .prevent any attempt to that effect. When Mr. Bryan says that as Unlt-yl States senator "he would have nothing to do" with an income tax, he either wilfully attempt to deceive the people ,r he exposes an ignorance of the sub . Jeet that is painful to contemplate in candidate for so high an office. Really, without looking it up, can ny editor tell what is tho cause or the Mexican revolution? That is, the last one. The Chinamen are coming to realize that it should not longer be said that their empire is a hack number, and progress is being made along various lines. Notable among theso is the cru sade against the opium habit which ?a so common there. Whether the influx of missionaries and travelers from other countries has been the means tf bringing about this awakening or som.i ether unknown movement, it is a fact that tho opium consumed in that coun try Is decreasing year by year, and the better class aro looking down upon those who continue the use. Mardl Gras in Pensacola is worth hile. Although public sentiment Is ; posi tively In favor of the direct election of United States senators, the "interests" aro fighting It strongly and the regular Republicans will hold out for the prcs ent method of electing senators. While the direct vote method will not always insure the election of the best man, it will prevent the wholesale buying of a legislature and the people will come nearer being represented. The public Is becoming better informed on na tional questions and in a few more ' years it can be depended upon to make the choice and the best men will be ; chosen. The open air free concert given dur ing the holidays to the poor people of San Francisco by the great singer. Madame Tetrazzlni. was an act worthy , I of commendation. This God-given i talent which the singer possesses was t ) civpn to th,s neoDle on Ihi nrrai,m Just because she loved them and wanted to sing for them. Democrats ore not satisfied with winning from the Republicans, but a strong fight is on to crowd out tho Democrats who ought to be in the Re publican party. In New York the pure Democracy crowd do not propose to havte a corrupt man run in as senator and the indications are that they win win out. - Pensacola is doing her part toward the battleship Florida's silver service, Another $125,000 fire in Jacksonville Monday morning. But a little thing like that does not discourage thi peo ple over them. Fires are what made Jacksonville the city it Is today. Every time there Is a fire, before the ashes have cooled, another building larger and handsomer is being built in the place of tho old one. The primary system is an expensive piece of business, but we still insist that it is worth the price. iscxt Wednesday we win not be so inhumane as to say "We told you so," but will say now that If j-ou want to get on the winnnfg side you had bettor get into the Blount procession. McCurdy did not make his flight from Key West yesterday as scheduled, lie is like all the rest, loath to leave Florida's Foil. The DeSoto County News is one of those good papers which has the happy faculty of being fair and square in its criticisms. In summing up the two candidates for United States senator, it says; Beware of extreme partisanship. Do not believe cither of the Florid ians running for the United States senate Is either a rascal, demagogue, .fool, up start or a corporation tool, who will work for "the interests" and not "the people." Both aro human and both size up pretty well with the rest of the world. If you fall to vote next Tuesday you will have failed to perform one of the duties every man owes to his people and himself. The Dunhams have traveled around the world and now aro operating a theater in Pensacola. Took a long trip to find tho best place but they are satisfied now. More fun during Mardi Gras than at any other time In Pensacola, Make your preparations to be here at that time. Luke Lea was a dark horse all right, but he is a fair example of what purity in politics means. The "Jacksonville spirit" has made Jacksonville and if everybody in Pen sacola would got the "Pensacola spirit" we would leave the town across tho state far behind in a few years. The bay presents an active appear ance these days. The shipping Is always on the increase. It is impossible to print the many nice things said by the state press about Mr. Blount. Can't figure out but one way to get rid of the hobble skirt. Lower the tariff and then the women can afford to have enough cloth to make a decent dress. It will take a little more dope to get Sheehan In. Florida is gradually becoming a net work jot railroads. The time is not far off when every county will have propu transportation facilities. No one has been known to get hurt while riding in a sled in Florida. An extra session of congress for the purpose of revising the tariff is being urged. The public wants it and it should be held. LAST HEAT IN THE SENATORIAL DERBY a Live Oak Democrat, And now the last heat in the great senatorial Derby is on, and with all the people of Florida looking on, the two thoroughbreds, Blount and Bryan, have started in on the final "magnificent burst of speed" for the royal prize hung up for the winner. The Democrat takes the unexciting role of the impar tial commentator and historian on the issue and is content to record events as they occur, sure that the people will do the right thing and that Florida will get a ' good senator, no matter which one wins. At this writing, which is before the official count by the state committee, Mr. Blount's total vote is set down at 13.245; Mr. Bryan's total vote, 8,503, and Mr. Stockton's total vote, 7,526. These figures eliminate Mr. Stockton and give Mr. Blount' a heavy lead of more than 4,000 votes over Mr. Bryan. This is a large advantage in the pend ing contest, and carries with it a cer tain prestige which may make many additional votes for Mr. Blount, as it is one of the marked trails of human nature to want to get on what looks to be the winning side. The problem of the second primary, of course, .is, to which candidate will the Stockton vote, or the greater part of It, go. It is fair to assume that -Mr. Blount will hold the full strength of his vote in the recent primary; and if he does this, and there shall be no larger total vote polled in the second than :n me nrst primary, considerably less than half of Stockton's strength given to him would elect him. But it is by no means certain that he can get it. Mr. Stockton's vote came largely from men who were his devoted personal followers, who have stayed with him in all his campaigns, more or less, by his personal wishes in the coming primary. He has addressed a public letter to them asking their support for Mr. Bry an, and If they comply that gentleman will be elected, assuming that he will continue to hold his vote In the first primary. Messrs. Blount and Bryan have both started in on the final test of strength with much vigor, and doubtless as far as possible, they will go over the same ground they did before. There is noth ing new to be said now by either in the way of argument, and they can only repeat and emphasize what thqy have already said. But speechmaking nor literature has much Influence over a large section of voters who neither hear the one nor read the other, and are governed by fragmentary bits of campaign talk, personal likes or dislikes or fixed pre conceptions in casting their ballots. There are perhaps enough of these, now released from their allegiance to Mr. Stockton, to determine the issue. How they will vote no man can ac curately predict, no matter how well informed he may be, nor how shrewd ly he may reason. They are the un known quantity in the. coming primary, and while Messrs. Blount and Bryan both profess themselves sure of vic tory, we can share the confidence or neither because we can't look into the minds of these Stockton voters who may or may not follow their defeated leader into the camp of Mr. Bryan. Following the defeat of Senator Taliaferro for re-election to the Senate from Florida, and the death of the successful contestant, Mr. Broward, Florida cn Tuesday held another pri mary for the selection of a candidate. and dispatches Indicate that the lead er m the primary is W. A. Blount, who 'will enter a second primary with P. Bryan, as his opponent. Mi Bryan is a brother of the Senator Bri an who was appointed to succeed Senator Mallory. and who died short ly after taking tJhe oath of offlca Mr. Blount is probably the most brilliant lawyer in the State of Flor ida. His education has been broad. He has never allied himself with po litical factions, but as a State Senator worked in the legislature, notably in connection with the reorganization of the school system. If called to Wash ington, he would doubtless take high rank among his colleagues almost from the beginning and -would add greatly to Democratic strength at the Capital. Florida has an opportunity, in other words, to elect a Senator who will take rank with the elder Mallory. She can render valuable ser vice to the national Democracy by doing so. Charleston News and Cour ier. Blount's Endorsement. The splendid endorsement that Hon. William A. Blount received at the hands of his countrymen is highly gratifying to both Mr. Blount and his ANOTHER BRYAN BOOMERANG Charge That Blount's Absence From State Senate Was In Interest of L. & N. is Refuted By Those Who Were Interested in Suit at Issue. TO THE VOTERS OF FLORIDA: We, the undersigned voters of Es cambia county, Florida, have heard that it was stated by Mr. N. P. Bryan, that Mr. W. A. Blount, the leading candidate for the United States Sen ate, was absent from his duties in the Senate f Florida, for 18 days during the session of 1905, and that most of the time he was engaged in filing injunctions against the Railroad Com mission, in the interest of the Louis ville & Nashville Railroad, and in fighting for a five cent per mile rail way fare for a section of that road. In contradiction of this statement, v.e beg to say that Mr. Blount was engaged during the time mentioned, in the prosecution of a lawsuit in Mobile. Alabama, with which the Louisville & Nashville Railroad Com pany had nothing whatever to do.Hmt in which only private interests were involved. One of the undersigned, Judge John C. Avery, was of . coun sel for the opposite party to the suit, and the others were witnesses in the case. We make this statement in simple friends and supporters throughout the state. It was no more than had been expected for (him to carry W. Florida almost solidly, "but even his most ardent and enthusiastic supporters had not looked for such a vote for bira in East and Middle Florida. His popularity is so large that it is believed that Mr. Bryan will see the futility of entering the second primary and allow Mr. Blount to be declared the nominee. The tremendous vote for Mr. Blount is a testimonial of his integrity and worthi He has never been a candi date before, but the people !had of him and 3;new that he would make Florida any able and faithful sena tor. If it comes to a second primary Mr. Blount's supporters "will unite and put him in with a majority that will smash all former records. Santa Rosa Star. Endorsement From Home. The vote given Hon. Wm. A. Blount in his 'home town is a fine tribute to his character. Out of 2695 votes he received ?414. Nine out of every ten of his fellow-townsmen vot ed for his. Starke Telegraph. W. A. Blount Next Senator. The magnificent run marlr? by thi West Florida candidate in all sections of the state was a surprise even to his supporters. Mr. Blount likes only a few hundred rotes of equalling both of his opponents, carrying a great ma jority of counties in Pouth Florida, which were slated for Bryan and Stockton. The returns are not yet complete to admit of a full discussion at this time but Justifies the conclu sion that the West Florida candidate if he is not already nominated will re ceive an overwhelming majority in the 3 DAYS TREATMENT CURES WORST LIQUOR CASES Whiskey drinking is a prison.
