JO TO BE RESTORED TO IP OF FLA. TOWN WIPED. OUT FIFTY YEARS AGO BY YELLOW FEVER AND i BUSINES8 ADVERSITY PROMO TION COMPANY IS BUSY. Soeclal to The Journal. Columbus, Ga-, March 21. Port St. Jo, Fla a town that was wiped out over half a century ago through a combination of yellow fever and eco nomic conditions, has been restored to the map, and if the efforts of a land company and a railroad company that are now behind it are successful, the place win b one of the leading gulf porta There is a live Columbus end to the present resurrection of the St Jo, for, along with the revival of the port the railroad company interested, the Apa lachlcola - & Northern, proposes to handle Columbus freight In wholesale Quantities to the "new port, hav ing made a proposition to the Chatta hoochee steamboat lines as to transfer of. freight that Is said to be agreea ble. The old port of St. Jo has a history interesting, and even romantic. It was settled nearly a century ago, and quite a town sprang up. One of the first five railroads in the United States was built from St Jo to a point on the Apalachlcola river. The railroad tariff was almost as crude as the road Itself, for five cents was the charge for haul ing a, bale of cotton the entire length of the line. That such an enterprise failed was not so strange, and when it did so it was the death blow to the old town of St Jo. Then the yellow fever came, being brought by a ship that was driven in by a storm, and what few people left In the place departed hurriedly. It is said that some of the material used in building the railroad was afterwards employed in building the old Georgia railroad, and certain it is that the stringers were taken up and shipped away to some point RUNAWAY PRISONER IS RECAPTURED Arthur Scott, alias Sparks, was ar rested yesterday afternoon by Officer Lowery charged with being 1 a run away. About the middle of January last, Scott was convicted on the charge of vagrancy and was sentenced to serve thirty days for the city. He served nine days and escaped from the street gang on the 26th, since which time he has been at large. Coffee that pleaiea mutt be blended to have the right strength Rich Flavor.
