The writer, representing the owners of this business
(a corporation worth many millions), has, been coming to
Pensacola once a year for several years to assist in the annual
inventory ;
It had been his opinion for a long time that an UP-TO-DATE,
MODERN DEPARTMENT STORE would be a
paying investment He convinced the owners of this, and
since the retirement of Mr Lannon, efforts have been made
to secure a good, live merchant who would invest one-fourth
of the capital needed, so that this business could be reorgan
ized and a modern department store built expressly for the
business.
A Mr Glenn May was interested, came to- Pensacola
with his wife, arid stayed at the San Carlos several days. He
was very much impressed with the prospects, sufficient to go
to St Louis, meet the owners and go into conference on de
tails. A contract was drawn up and corporation papers pre
pared, and Mr. Glenn May was to be president and general
manager. While, in Pensacola, Mr. May accepted site
offered and agreed with writer on general interior arrangement
of store .

The owners in St. Louis were waiting for Mr. G. May
to come and sign contract and complete the deal After sev
eral days' delay, he wrote that his wife absolutely refused to
live South, and the deal had to be declared off " -
Now the owners set about looking for someone else, so
that the original plans could be; carried out While they were
doing this, we were notified to get out of our present store
room at thef expiration of our present lease, May 1st
Read this extract of letter:

Dear Sir Please take notice, that we will expect possession of the place which you now occupy promptly
on the date of the expiration of your present lease, and that the aald lease will not be extended for any length of
time. We are giving thia definite notice In order that you may have aa much time aa possible, either to dispose .
of your stock or look around for new quarters. Please, therefore, consider the matter closed, aa It la Impossible
for us to permit an EXTENSION of your lease after May 1st, 1911, for any length of time whatever. .

Pending trying to find another investor, we asked an
extension of 30 to 60 days, so that our original plans could
be carried out and give Pensacola a modern department store.
The above letter was our answer
The records of this firm show that our rent has been paid
promptly every month in advance for seven years; also we have
been large tax payers and contributors to every public enter
prise for the benefit of Pensacola But it all now counts for
naught; we are practically driven out of your city, because, so
far, we have been unable to carry out our wishes before our
lease expires, as the Fisher Real Estate Company want the
building for themselves
MARK THIS: Pensacola will never grow and take rank
with other cities unless a more liberal spirit is shown Your
commercial organizations are useless in trying to get new en
terprises, if you do not, with a grip of steel, hold on to those
you already have Take a lesson from Houston, Atlanta,
Kansas City, Oklahoma City, and many others Be open
handed and courteous, try and deserve the name of southern
hospitality to the strangers within your gates, inhale the spirit
of progress, invite others to come, don't put a fence around your
city, and then you can make this city what it ought to have
been 20 years ago, the leading commercial city on the Gulf of
