One of the most modern and well equipped baseball parks In the south Is now under construction at the corn er of Gregory and G. streets. The work Is well under way and It Is an ticipated that the grand stand and fences, practically all that Is left to be done, will be completed during the first portion of next week and th grounds ready for games. The promoters of the new ball park are John G. Oliver, C. F. Schad and E. W. Peake. all thirty-third degree fans, and they believe that PensacoJa Is sufficiently Interested In the nation al game to warrant the expenditure of several thousand dollars on stands and equipment alone. The enclosure Is 420 by 480 feet In size, sufficiently large for a baseball ground, and all of It has been grub bed, levelled off and sodded, with the exception of the diamond, on 'which over five hundred loads of clay have been placed, and it will prove to be one of the fastest and best in the south. , The bleachers have been completed, and a large force of men are now at work on the grand -stand. The latter Is In three sections and stands about eight feet off the ground on solid sup ports. Under the grand stand will be the refreshment stands, shower baths for players, dressing rooms, toilets, the press box and players benches. The entrance to ,the park will also be from beneath the grand stand. One sec tion of this structure will be for re served seata, chair backs being placed for the comfort of those who desire the luxury of a chair. The grand stand will have a seating capacity of between twelve and four teen hundred, while the bleachers will seat a thousand more, thus providing plenty of seating room for a large crowd. The Turner Construction Co. is do ing the work, and expect to have the grand stand completed within a few days. It is expetced that the street rail way company will construct a spur track from the West Hill line to the ball park, thus affording street car fa cilities for those who- attend the games. That the amateur show has come to Pensacola to stay was manifest at last night's amateur performance at the Orpheum theatre as well as the large houses that these local talent per formances have been attracting within the past few months. The crowds that came to the Or pheum last night were even larger than usual and It was not a disappointed crowd that left the theatre by any means. The local talent show last night was up to the standard of all of those that have been conducted at the Orpheum under the management of Lew Rose and several new amateurs who made their debut last night bid well to become as prominent in future entertainments of the kind as some of those who have been making such a decided 'hit and have proven so great a drawing card within the past. Tony Klumpker, who began his vau- ft MISS CHARLOTTE DUNCAN The jolly songstress at the Orpheum theatre all this week. devllle career on the amateur stage In Pensacola and since has won fame on some of the largest circuits of the south, thought it no more than fair that he should appear last night, and he did so, to the extreme delight of all who were present. This afternoon the Orpheum will hold its second matinee performance of this week under the new arrange ment of only three matinees during the week, during the hot summer months. Saturday afternoon, of course, will be the children's matinee and Man ager Rose announced last night that he has made special preparations for a novel surprise for the little ones on the coming Saturday's matinee. The Nash ville Industrial bureau today tele graphed Robert Alphonso Taft. son of President Taft, to come to Nashville, take the state bar examination and establish himself here for practice. Young Taft was denied examination in Ohio because he had not registered when he began to study law and must wait two years before taking the state examination there. Discipline Must be Preserved. General Nelson A. Miles tells this story to illustrate the result of carry ing military discipline too far. There was a certain colonel who, in the mid dle of a campaign, was seized with a sudden aKior about hygiene. He or dered that all the men change their shirts at once. The order was duly carried out, ex cept In the case of one company, where the privates' wardrobes had been pitiably depleted. The captain of this company was informed that none of his men could change their shirts, since they had only one apiece. When he reported this fact, the colonel hesi tated a moment, then said, firmly: "Orders must be obeyed. Let the men change shirts with one another." Youth's Companion.
