Washington, June 15. Gen. Leonard
Wood, chief of staff of the army, said
today that the science of aviation has
now passed the experimental stage,
and its progress would not be stayed
by the accident Tuesday at College
Park. Md.. in which Lieut. Lelghton
W. Hazlehurst, Jr, Seventeenth in
fantry, TJ. S. A., and Alfred W. Welch.

the Wright blethers, lost their lives.
The occurrence, he considered, would
tend to make the army aviators more
careful.
The accident fcPTed when Welch
and Haalehurst were attempting to
make the tests required by the gov
ernment in a machine contracted for
by the war department.
Although an army board was Im
mediately appointed to determine the
cause of the accident, it is probable
the cause of the machine's failure
never will be known. The crash came
1 ao suddenly and unexpectedly that
th two men met their death without
being able to make a single move to
arrest their falL Seven army flyers
were among the score of spectators,
(but they cannot explain the acci
dent. Lieut. Hazlehurst was In his twenty
sixth year and was unmarried. The
home of his parents Is at Macon. Ge
but he was appointed to Weet Point
from Mississippi, being graduated and
commissioned a second lieutenant In
1908. Ha had been with the aviation
corps stnee last March.
Mr. Welch, for several years a resi
dent of Washington, had for three
years been with the Wright brothers.
He was a member of the Wright camp
in Chicago for the aviation meet in
August, 191L

board of equalization, which shall
have power to Increase, reduce,
change or alter any and all assess
ments for the purpose of an equal
assessment.
