March 18. Cotton futures opened barely steady at a decline of 1 to 7 points on rather disappointing cables and reports of favorbale weather In the south. The market steadied on a bullish report on supply and distribution, with firtces recovering to within s point or wo of yesterday's closing. The market was very quiet late In the forenoon. The census report figures were considered bullish as to mill consump tion, but their influence in that respect was offset by the large stocks shown In the hands of domestic spinners, and after a rally to within a-point or two of yes terday's closing, prices showed little further change. The market cqnrlnued quiet during the early afternoon. Bullish spot . advices from Memphis, which reported a good demand, held prices steady, around the closing figures of yesterday, right after midday. Later there was some New Or leans selling and reports of some Increas ed offerings from the Interior, but prices showed only light recessions. Cotton spot closed quiet. There was fur ther liquidation of Industrial shares to day, owing to discrimination agalnat this class of securities In loans and to poor earlngs of some of these companies). Low record prices were made in some issues. Important stocks, after some hesitation, responded to short covering, due to the belief that the list was thoroughly liquid ated for the time being. Bonds) were irregular. Scarcity of buying orders, as moch as any indication of pressure, caused the market to sell off slightly, with some leaders falling under the lowest of the morning. Minor stocks continued down ward, with broadening; of the selling pressure In that quarter. Pennsylvania was heavy and went down -to 118 1-4, Its recent lowest. The remainder of the list was motionless. The undertone was depressed, but bear operators put out few stocks, and liquid ation seemed checked for the moment. New Orleans Futures. New Orleans, March 18 Cotton futures opened firm at an advance of 8 to 5 points on indifferent cables and a pood weather map. While some frost was re ported In the cotton belt, the cold was more than offset In the opinion of the trade, by the absence of rain. Shorts were inclined to take profits, and no great seling power developed In the earlv trading. At the lowest, prices were $ to 5 points down. At the end of the first half hour of business they were 1 to 2 points down. The market became very steady around the middle of the morning, although no great activity waa in evidence. Market comment was that the short Interest was large and was endeavoring to cover in view of the approaching census report on ginning and the Easter holidays. The census figures today on consumption of cotton In this country, showing an out-of-sight movement of 466,988 balss for February, were called bearish, because they indicated a falling off compared with January, but they led to only small selling. Bulls pointed out that February was a short month. At noon offerings were scanty and prices were 1 to 2 points over yesterday's close. Liverpool Market. Liverpool, March 18.
