SPECIAL. TO THE -JOURNAL,
'irand Ridje. Mar 17. Practically
all of the candidates for offloes in
Jackson county addressed a g-atherir.K
of several hundred voters at "Two-e?K
town," about eleven miles north of
Grand Ridge this afternoon. The prin
cipal speakers were W. .T. Sing!-'tarv
and Dr. P. A. Willis, candidates fr
the state senate, both of whom havp
been makinsr an active canvass of the
county, on account of which more than
ordinary interest was manifested.
Some time pince Dr. Willis attacked
the legislative record of Mr. Sinple
tary, alleging thai the lattir, -while a
member of the state legislature voted
for the bill to increase the pay of
county commissioners, insinuating
that Mr. Singletary's subsequent can
didacy for a seat on the county board
was due, in some measure, to the fart,
that the bill became a law. Mr. Sin
gletary denied votinsr for the nieuMiir--and
defied Dr. Willis to prow hi
statements from the paes of the offi
cial journal. Argument on this point
was again expected by many of thoe
who attended and they were not dis
appointed. The last two weeks of the canvass
for votes in Jackson county will bo
unusuallv lively, for candidates are out
in force .Ttid will .allow no voter t
escape argument as to their respective
claims.

Th "seal conoly" at Bay view park
' is bordering on the offensiye, accord
ing to expressions which were heard
there by scores of persons yesterday.
This was really the first Sunday of the
newly opened season, and hundreds of
people gathered there. An objection
able stench, which arose from the en
closure holding: the animals, was com
plained of by many, and it develops
that there has been started a move
ment to petition for the removal of tae
enclosure. The stench arises from the
tineaten fish which is daily furnished
the animals, and the commissioners
will doubtless today receive a strongly
expressed request for the removal of
ihe animals to a point about 200 feet
from the pavilion proper.
The British steamship Denby ar

thronged th pavilion.
