SCHOOL INSPECTOR
FOR FLORIDA PAYS
L VISIT
Prof. W. S. Cawthon, state high
school inspector arrived in the city
yesterday on an official visit, for the
purpose of inspecting the Pensacola
High school, and the Gonzalez Ag
ricultural School. Accompanied by
Superintendent of Public Instruction
A. S. Edwards, Prof. Cawthon went
to Gonzalez, looked over the school
and made a short address to the
students there.
He appeared delighted with con
dition of the school and stated that
the county should feel proud that one
of the three schools of its kind in the
state should be owned by Escambia
county. He commented on the work
being done at the school, and ex
pressed himself as pleased with condi
tions there.
He then went to the High School,
housed temporarily in the tabernacle,
and again addressed the students, ex.
pressing his wonder that such ex
cellena arrangements could have been
made ,with the building. He touched
briefly on the qualifications for an
accredited school, and stated that he
felt certain that the local schobl
would pass the tests, which are real
ly a matter of the ability of individ
ual teachers. '
He said that it was pleasant to see
that school was being held this year
despite three fires and a forced re
moval, and that the spirit indicated
that the term would be a great suc

BOMB ENGLISH COAST
London, Oct. 19 At midnight to
night six or seven airships raided the
eastern and northeastern counties of
England, dropping bombs at various
points, including few in the London
area, according to an official state
ment ust issued. At this hour

BICYCLE CLUB PUTS
ON TWO CONTESTS
The meeting of the Tensacola Cycle
club last night was very good. The
main topic was whether the club
would continue activities throughout
the winter, and a lively discussion
followed finally ending in2 a2 vote
which decided that the club would
continue throughout the winter, as
suring a strong organization for the
holding of bicycle sports early next
spring.
At the meetine two contests were
started, one being a contest for
securing members, the other a contest
for the best attendance at meeings
and on different gatherings.
Three prizes will be given for the
new members, and two prizes were
given the club by T. T. Wentworth,
Jr. for the attendance, one being a
Solar electric light, other being a
bicycle wrench. These prizes will be
awarded the winners Feb. 15, 1918.
Both contests start next Friday
night, giving every member a chance
to compete, also all new members
joining the club next Friday night.
The bicycle races were brought to
the attention of all present and plans
will be announced during the week
for the different events to take next
Saturday. The registration book is
still open and al whq desire entering
the races will register before next
Saturday.
