The surprise was not that Sharkey was on his way to France Tom was always a fighter, but that he was with the Y. M. C. A. Tom's ways and the ways of the T. M. C. A have always been on two widely divergent paths. Sharkey's career in the ring is one of the most colorful in the annals of sport. He was first known, back in the nineties as the heavyweight champion of the navy. A husky fighting demon, he crushed all his opponents by sherr power. It was in 1896 that Sharkey sprang Into national fame. He was marched to meet Joe Choynsky, in San Francis co. Chonysky, one of the greatest heavyweights of the time, expected Sharkey to be a set-up, but neverthe les he trained carefully for him. WORK It is believed that the new 1,500-gal- lon-a-mlnute well at the city water plant will be in operation within the next two weeks. The derrick has been nerected and the contractors, Layne & Bowler Co., of Memphis, Tenn., expect to begin drill ing within a few days. There is said to have been some delay in securing needed equipment, but assurance is given of its early delivery. The new well will be about 20 Inches In diameter and from 150 to 200 feet deep, equipped with 60 feet of shutter type strainer and operated by an elec trically driven turbine pump. All of the equipment was manufac tured by the contractors, who are said to be the largest water developers In the world. They Installed the water supply for the Newport Turpentine & Rosin Company and have put in several wells for the government at the local forts. The test work for the Layne & Bow ler Co. is done by the Gray Artesian Well Co., which is now located here, and which brought the Layne Bowler representatives to this section. The city now has fourteen small wells with a combined capacity of 1,400 gallons a minute and with com pletion of the new well, the city's , wa- Sharkey, had no science, Choyssky was one of the cleverest heavyweights the ring had ever seen. .Twice in the early rounds of the fight Choynsky hit Sharkey so hard that he fell through the ropes to the floor outside. Twice Sharkey got to his feet and scrambled back into the ring. In the eight round the sailor battered Choynsky so terribly that his seconds threw . a towel Into the ring to save him from being knocked out. : In 1898 Sharkey - gave Jim Jeffries the hardest fight he ever had. For 20 rounds the two pugs battered them selves around the ring. The fight was called a draw. During those years Sharkey took on all the great heavy weights, Corbett, FItzslmmons, Huhlin, Kid McCoy and Peter Maher. Later Sharkey retired and bought him a saloon In New York. Little was heard of him during the last few years until he joined the T. M. C. A- ter supply will be more than doubled, though it will be somewhat less than the capacity of the'Newport Turpentine & Rosin Company's water plant. , -Pensacola and the surrounding terri tory produces the purest water obtain able in the entire country, being under laid with a 50-foot strata of water bearing sand and gravel from 100 to 200 feet below the surface. The sana gives a large filtering area, the water flowing from the wells absolutely free from harmful bacteria and objectlonai mineral matter. , The purity of our water has been known for many years, but its abun dance and the cheapness with which it may be obtained has only recently been appreciated. The Gray Artesian Well Company has drilled several wells for the army department and has just com pleted one at Ft. Barrancas which Is 10. inches In diameter and 240 feet deep, with 40 feet of strainer and produces 700 gallons per minute. A similar well is being drilled for the American Agricultural Chemical Com pany at its local plant SIX THOUSAND WHITE REGISTRANTS WANTED Washingnton, Aug. 3.
