- THE Armenian R elie f c ampai OPENS TODAY CLOSES SATURDAY, JAN'Y 18th Pensacola and Escambia's Allotment-$9,000 e Ready When Committee Calls on You to Do Your Utmost gn FACTS OF DESTITUTE CONDITION OF PEOPLE OF THE NEAR EAST The President's proclamation of November 29th, 1918, to the American people in behalf of the sufferers of Armenia, Syria and Greece and other exiles and refugees of Western Asia has appealed to the people as few calls have done. These homeless sufferers, exiled to the remote districts, in the mountains and desert places, are in need of immediate relief. Relief to prevent death by starvation. There are about 4,000,000 of them in the Near East and they must be sustained during the winter. They are hundreds of miles, from their homeland and the vast majority are helpless women and children, including 400,000 orphans. The condition of the peoples among the subject races of the Turkish Empire is appalling. A systematic effort has been made by the Turkish Government on orders from Berlin to literally exterminate the Syrians, Armenians, Greeks, Persians and Jews in those unfortunate lands with a result that over one million men have been butchered unmercifully and the women and children have been abused and outraged and driven into exile. Today they are actually starving to death and unless help comes speedily these four million people including four hundred thousand orphans will join the others who have already died of starvation. The American Committee for Relief in the Near East was organized by our Government through Am bassador Morganthau to meet the desperate situation and the President has called upon the American people to contribute $30,000,000 for this purpose, which, it is hoped, will tide them over until spring when the Peace Conference will nave settled the status of the Armenians and others and our Government will be enabled to help them officially as it cannot do now. The Red Cross has been, on account of the fact that it is essentially a war organization, unable to carry the relief work into these countries and this Committee is the only avenue of hope so that it is not a matter simply of helping them, but of actually saving them from starvation and that at once. -. . Florida has been asked to raise ?200,000 or just one fifth of the part she raised for the United War Work Funds. The amounts asked of the different counties in Florida will be easily raised if such women as you get behind the proposition and will come as a Godsend to these wretched peoples at their Christmastide, as a gift from the big, generous heart of the American people. "Charity begins at home," but it does not remain there, as it lives and grows, it extends to the remotest bounds of humanity and whenever a call of need is sounded, it is heeded at once. We have helped "ourselves." now it is time to help "others." This Space Contributed by AMERICAN NATIONAL BANK M. & O. CLOTHING STORE GARDEN THEATRE THE LEWIS BEAR CO. SAN CARLOS HOTEL W. A.
