Once again has, debating work come to , the fore into Its own, ' The civU government class, senior, under Mr. Stapjeton, claims ; the championship of the , school, by reason ' of the fact that they have challenged the school to a debate on the league of nations question, and the challenge has not yet been : accepted. . The challenge is extended- to any team in thef school, faculty or otherwise, and will be just as beneficial, to the hearers as to the participants, for the league . of na tions question is undoubtedly the fore most subject before the world today. The senior class holds .the cham pionship In inter-class and outside de bating; for the UUe of tlje school cham pion was gained last year by the class of '19 by defeating the class of '18, and the championship remains unchal lenged. And both teams selected i to represent Pensacola High : School sin out-of-town debates were ; composed wholly of seniors. I The senior class Is willing to accept a challenge any tune, I although the school term is growing short. ' " Success j The annual Blount composition con test was held in school last Thursday For this contest there are twelve con testantsthree from ach class who have the highest class averages in English work, who write for the con test, the paper adjudged the best be ing awarded a medal. The contestants were from the freshman class, Carrie Mae Curtis, Lucia Tryon and Monroe Campbell; Sophomores, Kathryn Weh meier, - Audrey Keller, Verna Day; Juniors, Oliver Semmes, Kenneth Cahn, Mary Ansley; and seniors. Agathe Borchgrevlnck, Margery Pierpont and Sig Solomon. The subject, as all the contestants declared, was an excellent one "Success." Stenography. - As commencement draws near,-the stenographic students begin dreaming unpleasant dreams, and wiggling fin gers in their sleep. For it is incum bent upon ; them to pass a certain required test f in typewriting absolute ly perfect, and to make a certain re quired number of words per minute in shorthand before they gain their unit in these studies. And - It is also In cumbent upon them to report a . ser mon in shorthand this Sunday, so, if a minister should see someone scribe bling rapidly or wildly waving arms in the air, let him hot get excited it is only a P. H." S. student who has lagged behind or written a word wrong ' Notations. The, Junior and Sophomore Engllbh classes are doing som . eexceptionally good work in debating nowadays. The debates in these classes are being held regularly, and it Is expected that there will be a resultant pick-up In debating interest next year. . The teachers an nounce they have discovered several new orators who will, by hext year, be ready to carve for themselves a niche in - Pensacola HIgb4- School's-? - hall i of debating fame. Play. i.The next play to be given by the school will be the minstrel. Work, on this play " has been . hard and long, and it is expected the play will be the success of the year. It is divided Into : four parts first part, regulation ministrel; second, special acts; . third, digger Klght, School," and fourth, a whirlwind close. The ' ministrel this year is being produced, for the bene fit of the military company, and the boys have gotten - together a strong aggregation of school talent, includ ing singers and dancers,' as well as jokesters. .The popular new songs will be rendered by ; boys whose singing ability is wen known In school. There is also a comedy parody, "High School Blues", to the tune of a popular "blue" song, words and rendition by the Major. The music class has " almost com pleted its rehearsals of the comic opera, "Behind the Front." This opera is an entirely new one, written with the late war as a background, the scenes being laid in France, behind the front. There are Included In the cast many soldiers, beautiful Red Cross and chor us girls, as well as other American and French characters. The play was written by Lawson MackaU, the popu lar writer for such magazines as "Judge" and "Life." This play has swept the country like wildfire since Its first production a short while ago, and Pensacola is to be congratulated on having the opportunity to witness this opera before it has gone out of date. The parts are all taken by P. H. S. pupils, the musical parts are under the direction of Mrs. Nlta Os borne Benn; sjnd the actionals direct ed by Mrs. A. C.
