The way to learn to bat is by batting.
"Keep at it. But youngsters are apt to
,iave certain faults which no amount of
f practice will eradicate unless they ars
pointed out to them.
The chief mistake of most young
tiatters is a tendency to "pull" away
.from the plate. The reason for this
is- 'a fear of being hit by the ball.
Ia-get rid of this disastrous habit,
take a firm stand at the plate, legs
rather wide apart and then get some
jne to pitch to you. Make up your
tnlid not to "give" an inch and you
tvill find yourself becoming more con
fident as your practicing goes on.
Other boys are inclined to be too
confident and this results in- care
lessness and underestimating the op
posing pitcher.
In selecting a bat pick out one you
can swing freely. Grip the bat firm
ly and about six inches from the end.
Take a short snappy swing in pref
erence to a long clumsy one. Batter3
who can place a ball with reasonable
accuracy are preferred by managers to
those who try to murder every pitch.
Keep your eye on the ball every
second, remember a base on balls is as
good as a hit in some cases. And
don't forget the best advice to would
be "Ty Cobbs" is to practice, practice
and then 'practice some more.

Charles E. Van Metre was appointed
manager of Maxent Park by the city
commissioners yesterday afternoon
Mr. Van Metre is to have bleachers
erected, . a. fence built and later a
grandstand to accomodate the crowds
who go to the park to watch tho
games.
Plans are being made to strengthen
the Pensacola Regulars and to arrange
games for Friday, Saturday and Sun
day of each week. It has not been
announced when this schedule will
