When Dad 'X- - did. But I had a time making both ds agree with one another. I did not tell Penny, I did not have e heart. She kept saying: "Oh, Polly! -u lovely child! How perfectly dear you to give up thi3 attractive room. is too bad that you cannot get the mis that Nona gave up, but I am sure a can get something Just as good!" 1 -iled bravely, and looked over at ryant's Park, and wodered ir it really is as bad as O. Henry made it out to -, to sleep on the soft side of a parte nch. Hiss Thorn said: "I know someone 0 has rooms to rent in this vry block, ?. Mr. and Mrs. Hyphen Blank, from nsacola, were there for a long time, 1 said it was all right. I am sure e would take you in she nearly always s a vacancy." Somehow, I did not consider this a rec- hmendation, but anyhow, I'll try any- ng once, so I sallied forth with my :omitable bearing to get me a room at enty per. That was about all I could rird with Dad hypnotizing me with his w psychology on money matters. I was met at the door by a slovenly zto girl, who said her mistress would t be in until five, but she would show e fte room. It was a sitting-room, usty and horrid. And with a cot bed! hen 1 called at five the landlady, who oked like Miss Hazey, in Mrs. "VViggs, tid that would be thirty dollars per orKh, and the bath wa3 on the next oor. I renig'ged. I met a friend who said: "Go to the ;p Van Winkle, they are lovely.' The p Van "Winkle is delightfully situated -. the thirties, and has such a pleasant ;: about it, with its cozy basement tea era, I was quite delighted. But it was 1L It always is. I know this sounds Uher rather, but the Rip Van Winkle very much like the moon when it is :1 it Is at its best. At least that is sat the landlady told me. I went down the stairs with less alacrl ' than I went up them. Someone in the a room said: "The ladies of the Blank srch have an information and service ireau on Thirty-sixth street. So I went ere. Two other girls were ahead of f t One went out as I went in. The aer was quite young, very stupid, and s passing, very dirty. She certainly Mt have hailed from Jumping Off Cor sr, and looked it every inch of her five et two. But the woman was lovely 3 her. She answered all of her many aestions and looked so polite and help & that my spirits rose. I felt quite wwraged. but to no avail. My feel "Ss had little to do with the matter. he woman -was quite sure that she had cihing that would do for me. Perhaps wa3 because I had on a goodlooking though heaven knows !t was not spensive as expenses go. But it was in Pensacola and I find that made i Pensacola things, myself included, have father smart air. At lenxf n T -m 4 and I accept these remarks at their R value. Please notice the pun. evidently there was something about ? tnat disagreed with the lady, and she no pains to hide it. Polly, it was e':rst time in ray life that I ever felt .ded in my selfrespect. But when I ?L out f that room I wondered what a said or done. Anyhow, she had n'.l6 t0 offer so out I went again " the cold and cruel world. f!t quite desperate so I said to a I: "This has got to stop, -a my be economical, but he will have ' save in some other way. And I . 0Ver t0 a lovely little nomey hotel J i?"fifth street, and asked for a uro'i cIerk ,ooke at me, and said e'y that their rooms were all taken. I went to two other hotels and their rooms were all taken. It was funny. It did not seem as if there should be such a sudden run on hotels. And then sud denly I remembered that I had heard that many hotels in New York refused to take unchaperoned ' girls. Patty, way back yonaer in the land of shamrock and colleens, I had fighting ancestry, and I have had them every generation since, they tell me. I don't doubt it. I was mad clear through when that idea hal gradually seeped itself into my, brain. But there was one hotel knew alt about. I had stayed there several times by myself. So I called up the McAlpin and asked if I could have a room re served on the woman's floor, and received an affirmative reply. Over - went, bag and baggage, boiling with rage against those other hotel men whose hotels were too full to take me in. The woman's floor of the McAlpin is unique. It is particularly for girls and women traveling alone. Presiding over it is a genius in the way of a charming and cultivated woman, with whom one may register, and with the proper cre dentials, meet other club" women, . and get in touch with club life in New York. .For instance, if you are a V. D. C. and of course you are or an F. F. V., nr a P. H. D.t or a D. P.- Q., you register and show your union card, and there you are. . The hostess of the woman's floor puts you in touch with the president of your club, and you meet other club women and so on, ad infinitum. ' She also arranges sight-seeing parties for you, or theatre parties, and secures for you a proper chaperone. However, being unused to being dragged hither and yon by even the most willing victims, I did not go in for any of these diver sions. Instead I spent my time that aft ernoon with the hairdresser on the same floor. For there are hairdressers and manicurists and stenographers and la dies' maids and everything. was very economical, so I took a room with hot and cold water, but with out bath, and it cost me $2.50. But I spent a dollar more, dropping quarters in the slot metre, for the fascinating tittle toilet articles they have in all the hotel bedrooms here. But I "was staring bankruptcy In the face, by the next morning, so I had to count my dollars. Somehow, long ago. I had heard of the Martha Washington hoteL So I set out to find it. It w- East Twenty-nith street, I think it s twenty-nine, anyhow it's in the twenties I never was good at figures. There are three hundred rooms, and not a single man, or a married one either, for that matter, is allowed in that hotel. Now and then one may see one, like a lost sheep, or snooping about, like a roar ing f.on, but they are just attaches not fixtures. They do not belong. All tho wemen get rid of them as soon as possi ble. And they cannot rent a room at the -Martha Washington. Somehow that seemed to sort of even up things, and 1 was glad. I got me a room for $1.50 and it was dear in every wey except in price. Not a very big room, but oh, such a nice big closet. The bed was white, and so was the dresser and the little reading table, and the rocker and the straight chnfr. which were the only furnishings. The big closet was fitted out with lots f-f hooks, and runnig hot and cold water, pnd a place to put your shoes and And So Forth, to quote Yours Truly, Lt. Harmon of Colliers. I am going to stay here for a while, anyhow. Penny says she has always want ed to stay here, and wishes she had known. But I really think Penny is in clover where she is.
