Famous Detective in Fiction Stone Seen in "Vicky Van." Who, that loves a detective story. is unfamiliar with that famous char acter created by Carolyn Wells, the American Sherlock Holmes, and hero of many of her novels Stone. He will be seen in the flesh in "Vicky Van," Paramount's screen version of one of Miss Wells latest novels, in which beautiful Ethel Clayton is the star, and which will be shown at the Isis theater today. Ethel Clayton will be seen in the name part, a sort of dual role. She is in reality Ruth Schuyler, wile of a wealthy man old enough to be ner father. With a legacy of her own, to escape the hateful monotony of her married life, she assumes a dif ferent name, "Victoria Van Allen,' and disguising herself, holds weekly bohemian parties in an adjoining house she has purchased. Her hus band discovers the game and abuses her. He is later found dead there enters the mystery and the detective who solves the problem frees ' the young widow from suspicion. Pistol Fight. , In spite of his amiability and in variable good nature, Tom Moore has his moments of storm and stress on the screen when his audiences do not know. The likable star has made his mark in comedy-dramas laid in the environment of polite society or sim ple domestic life. For this reason his admirers do not associate vith hira the narrow escapes and thrills attend ing the .efforts of the more strenuous elavers. It is an appealing, human sort of a play, replete with momenta of quiet charm and fresh humor. Yet it i in thia verv Droduction that Tom Moore had most to contend with. As a policeman, the role assumed by the star, he might be expected to meet with stirring: adventures in tne per formance of his duties. This is pre cisely what does happen, though the danger of the scenes is not guessed hv th audience. When he sees a limousine speeding In the park, where he is on guard as a mounted officer, there is no danger in the brisk canter which brings him up to the machine. Nor is there dan ger except to his heart when beau tiful Seena Owen, as the society hero ine, meets his eyes with a cold stare and listens to his rebuke. She con Btrupa it as imDertinance and has him demoted as a result. Certainly there is no danger in that, except to the po liceman's pride. But later when she is astride a runaway horse and the tj-ame policeman dashes to her .rescue there is a very real danger for both. It is a wild ride, the girl a mount tear ing along the smooth bridle path at breakneck speed, with the star in alarmed pursuit. This is depicted on the screen with absolute fidelity and in such a way that it is easily eeen other people were not risking their lives for Tom Moore and his leading woman. Both insisted on no substi tutes being provided. In a quieter episode, however, the star bucked, up against more serious peril. First the scene was photographed at closer range than It appears in the play, the result being that he was badly burned about the face. Although blanks , were used, of course, the exploding powder came dangerously near his eyes. At once there was consternation among the company while Tom . Moore, hardly knowing what had hap- J pened, begged them not to be alarmed - that he was all right. His chief re gret was that he was shown in the picture that something unexpected had happened and spoiled a good scene. Of course he was patched up and the incident retaken. But it was several days before the close-up in which Seena Owens dabs his temples with her handkerchief could be don because of the condition of Tom Moore's countenance. Bernstein's "Dixie Daisie Com pany," as their week-end offering played the "Winning Widow" to a;i enthusiastic audience last night. One of the new pleasing features was the introduction of a comedy mixed quartette which, considering that this was their initial performance, went over big. Florence Drake, bewitch ingly dainty, rendered, "I'll Say She Does,' and got well deserved ap plause. Joe Bennett, with his song, "I've Got the Ring," and his eccen tric dance, was very well received and scored heavily. Hazel Joyce, as the "merry widow," and her" little song number, "I Want to Play." seemed to catch the audience in their ri ga bles for they encored and encored again and again. Blanche O'Melian, with her two song numbers, "What Will We Do on a Saturday Night When the Town Goes Dry.' and "I'm Just as Melancholy as Can Be," went way over the top, for the people aro dead in love with little Blanche and her winsome ways. In fact the whole bill was well received. la bidding farewell to this little company of artists, we can assure anyone that Pensacola need never be ashamed of being the home town of this ccmpany.
