By order of the War Department a
motor transport train, three miles long
will let ve Washington on July 7 and
cros Ihe continent to th Pacific
coast, reaching San- Fran.isco over
the Lit coin Highway.
This long Journey is to be made Irt
60 daye. It will serve a a test "f the
efficiency of the army's transport ser
vice, but what Is consulorel more ef
fective, will demonstrate to tho na
tion tho inestimable valja of ' system
of natianl highways.
The plans for the adventure have
been completed by the war depart
ment.' This transport train will be
the heaviest in the history of my ar
my. It Will be even heavier -than any
single unit of the huge transport ser
vice need to keep the armte of the
alllies supplied along the French front.
No mo or transport train of a 7 na
tion has ever attempted a continuous
journey of 3,000 miles in 60 days with
full wr equipment. The truck will
carry rot only their own supples to
last th entire journey, but will carry
supply and repair units, as wll cs
complements of men and officers, rhe
marching orders call for an average
of 75 n lies & day. This schedule ne
cessitates a speed of 15 miles an hour
all the way from Washington to the
coast, to matter how unfavorable the
weather or geographical conditions.

leave the Capitol, heading for Pitc-i-burgh.
The course then followed vr'Al

Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming,
Utah, and Nevada. The transport
trucks will finally drop down the
western slope of the Sierra Nevada
range to Sacremen to,. California and
then on to San Francisco. ' .....
For many years the Lincoln High
way association has endeavored to
secure the backing of the government
in its project to build a thoroughly
sound ocean to ocean highway. The
proposed journey of the three miles of
motor transports Is the first official
assistance that it has received in Its
project. In many states good roads
have been campaign slogans and many
governors and mayors have been un
made or made according to their 1

out the country.
