, Frank McCoy, 13-year-old boy,- of
121 West Government street, riding a
bicycle, was run down by an auto
mobile driven by Mrs. T. A. Shell
at the corner of Intendencia and Bar
celona streets yesterday at 12:15
o'clock, but was not injured. The
front wheel of his bicycle was smash
ed. The accident was investigated by
Call Officer Commyni, of the police
department, but no arrests were
made.
Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Settle, of Quin
tette, received a message today
through the Red Cross announcing the
safe arrival from overseas of their
son, Sergt. James M. Settle,' who has
been with the Fourth Regiment. Motor
Mechanics of the Air Service, at Horu
arautin, France, since June, 1918.
Mr. J. F. W. lrklebach. of Quintette,
left Saturday for Chicago to be ab
sent from the city for about ten days
on business.
The Q. I. A. to the Brotherhood of
Locomotive Engineers Will hold a reg
ular meeting at Woodmen hall, at
3 o'clock this afternoon.
Representative Jarmon, member of
the state legislature from Santa Rosa
county, was in Pensacola yesterday,
preparing for his campaign for the
office of commissioner of agriculture.
Miss Grace Andrews will" give a
demonstration of soup mixtures this
morning at 10 o'clock at the canning
center. The center will ope nat nine
o'clock- today and tomorrow and close
at three o'clock.

will follow the one now being held.

cola during the month just closed and

in building and repairing totalled
$109,794.

night, at 8 o'clock, at their club rooms
in the court house building, when offi
cers will be nominated for the election
which will take place when the state
encampment meets here next Satur

Mineola. N. Y., July 1. The man
ner in which Dr. Walter K. Wilkins
came into possession of the rope with
which he hanged himself in the bath
room of the Nassau county jail here
last night was the subject of an in-!
vestigation begun here today by j
Charles R. Weeks, district attorney; !
Walter R. Jones, acting coroner and
other county officials. Dr. Wilkins,
convicted last Friday as the slayer of
his wife, Julia, was to have been sen- !
tenced to death tomorrow morning
to death in the electric chair at Sing
Sing prison.
' Every precaution had been taken to
prevent Dr. Wilkins from obtaining
anything with which he might at
tempt suicide and his jailers were un
able to explain how he came into
possession of the rope which was nev.
It was impossible for any one from
the outside to throw the -rope to the
prisoner for his cell contained no win
dows. 'The bathroom where Dr. Wil
kinsh ended his life also was without
windows. A search of hardware stores
and other places where rope is sold
was to be made today in an effort'
to trace the purchaser. One of the
three letters written by Dr. Wilkins
just before he ended his life, declared
that he was innocent. Another ad
dressed to Sheriff Phineas Seaman re
quested that $60 in his clothes be
used to have his body cremated.
Mrs. Julia Wilkins for whose death
her husband was held responsible was
beaten to death on the night of Feb
ruary 27 last in the driveway of her
Long Bach home, her skull fractured
by a hammer and a piece of lead
pipe.
Dr. Wilkins claimed both he and his
wife had been attacked by three bur
glars whom they had surprised at
work when they returned home.

discuss the proposed establishment of
free ports in the United States.
William Kent, member of the United
States tariff commission was invited
to attend the meeting ansir explain
the reasons which led to the com
mission to report in favor of establish
ing free ports. He also was expected
to describe the provisions of the San-ders-Sheppard
free zone bill now
pending in congress.
The delegates will also consider the
advisability of establishing a perma
nent free zone organization with
headquarters at Washington.

This action was as a precaution,
many civilians appearing to take it
for granted that the army regulations
had, been automatically annulled by

regulations will stand until further
orders are issued either by General
American headquarters or the inter

and hope for a speedy readjustment of
the world are voiced in the editorials

on the signing of the treaty of peace.
