lished up to the day of the armistice,

ber of deputies today by Deputy Louis
Marin. In a report on the disposal of
the effects of missing men.
. The. losses of the French army were
1.089,700 killed and 265.800 missing, or
16.2 ' per cent of the , total mobilized
force of 8.410,000., '
The losses of the navy totalled 10,
735, of Which 5,521 were killed and 6,
214 are missing ' . ' ; .

.Toledo, Ohio, July 3. The meeting
of the principals and various officials
of the Willard-Dempsey championship
bout here tomorrow to decide upon the
rules to govern the contest, passed
without a hitch. It was decided that
Willard and Dempsey should box ac
cording to the Marquis of Queensberry
rules with the kidney punch and side
chop blow barred. In clinches they
may box to protect themselves until
the referee . orders them to break, at
which both must step back without
hitting in the breakaway. In all other
respects the same rules which have
governed the heavyweight champion
ship contests of the past will be in
force. ,
. There were no changes made in the
personnel of the of ficials, nothlthstand-
Ing many rumors to the contrary. Ma
Jor Anthony JDrexel-Blddle of Phila
delphia will act as one- judge, while
Tex .Rlckard will serve In a similar
capacity. OUie Precord of this city
will be the referee with Jack Skelly as
alternate ready to take Record's place
In case the neoessity should arise. W.
Warren Barbour of New York will be
the official time keeper. The two
Judges will sit on opposite sides of the
ring and not together as originally
planped, this change being made at
the request of Dempsey's manager.
Those present at the conference were
Tex Rlckard, W. A. Gavin, represent
ing the board of boxing control; Jack
Kearns, manager of Dempsey; Referee
Pecord and a representative of the
champion. "
- Betting on the outcome of the bout
has proved surprisingly light to date
notwithstanding the gathering of thou
sands of prospective ;:" spectators. It
was estimated this morning by one of
the foremost wagering commissioners
that there was not much more than
$10,000 in actual stakes in the hands
of the various betting concerns. He
explained this situation upon the theory
that while the adherents of the two
heavyweights were sharply divided in
their opinion . of the result, each con
tingent had too much respect for the
fistic ability of the rival contender to
lay heavily on the chances on their
own favorite.
In some quarters sentiment appeared
to be veering towards the champion
for while Dempsey backers were of
fering even money on the challenger
a day or two ago, they are now asking
that : Willard men lay ten to eight.
Even when these odds are granted the
switch does not result In any large
sums being' turned over to the stake
holders. -At the leading commission
er's quarters the blackboards are filled
with various v betting preparations
which have remained un taken with the
exception of a few freak bets "for aev-

KILLED SHERIFF
AFTER ARREST

B. Peters killed Sheriff Stevens, of
Williamson county, last Friday night,
according to the authorities here, who
said Donald Vorhles, arrested with
Peters , and", brought here today for
safe keeping, had given them a state
ment , to that " effect after their ar
rival Peters, officials said, later col
lapsed In his cell.
- Both of the men, who are about 20
years old. were in a buggy with the
sheriff, who. it. Is understood, had
them under arrest for a minor in
fraction of the law. According to the
alleged statement of Vorhles, he had
fallen asleep In the buggy and was
awakened by a shot. He then heard a
second shot and could distinguish the
sheriffs face by the flash mar by
the gun. i
The fathers of both Vorhles and
Peters - visited Governor Roberts at
the state capital ; this morning and
thanked him lor taking precautions
to guard their sons from threatened
mob violence.. . Both of the prisoners
are 21 years old. - Peters ' collapsed
in his cell just before his father vis
ited him there. t
