WESTGARDEK STREET PAVING ISCCNTMCTED AWARD IS MADE TO JOHN GHER KINS AND WORK IS TO START IMMEDIATELY, IT IS UNDER STOOD. The contract for laying of several blocks of West Garden street paving was yesterday awarded by the city to John Gherkins, the sole bidder. Work began Immediately after the award was made and will be rushed to com pletlon. Mr. Gherkins bid, accepted by the board of commissioners at their week ly meeting, was for 9 1-2 cents for each square yard of wood block, 18 3 cents for each square yard of concrete base removed. 59 cents for each lineal foot of sewer including back-filling and $2.90 for each square yard of paving including grading and filling Material and labor will be furnished by the contractor who agrees to have the job complete within 49 days. The board accepted the report of Comptroller J. O. Walker, with a bal ance of $250,435.93 on hand the first of July Indicated. Expenditures for the department of streets and public works showed that $5,792.40 had been spent in spite of the comptroller's statement several weeks ago that funds were exhausted, loans from oth er departments were no longer feasl ble and that he refused to sign checks for this particular branch, of the. city's work, except for lighting purposes. The report of Plumbing Inspector Jolly was filed by the board. An application of J. T. Holland for city inspector of paving and sewerage was received. The board will probably take defl nite steps to fine or bring about the punishment of motorists who contin ually use siren whistles late in the evening while passing the Pensacola hospitals. Complaints to this effect have been received from physicians and Mayor Sanders has recommended that something be done to abate the alleged nuisance. DO YOUR EYES PAIN OR BURN?
