Europe doesn't like Soviets any more for the disclo sure that they are not 61 Russian but American invention, the Bolsheviks having announced that their pet ma shlne had been anticipated by several years by the people of Yucatan. If there's one thing Europeans thought they had a corner on it is political in vention. "When somebody came out and said strikes and strike-breaking originated in America, it began to hurt, so professors were sent to dig up a few historical facts to support Europe's claim to originality. In this backward race for questionable hon ors England claims first prize because the Old Adam of all strikers was found to have flourished in the good British soil of Egypt. It occurred, as a mat ter of fact, somewhat earlier than the British protectorate, about 4500 years ago, when 50,000 men of the Egyptian building trades quit work as a protest against their conditions of labor, par ticularly the Inadequate food arrange ments. After negotiations had failed the government called out the nation al guard and organized a union of strike breakers, and there were sev eral thousand casualties before work was resumed on the sky-scraper pyr amids of Cheops. All this has been found in finely quarried newspapers of the day, , to the relief of those who have been vainly looking for Yucatan or a map of the United States. Har- CHANGES IN CONSULAR SERVICES ADVOCATED New York, Oct. 17. S weeping changes in the diplomatic and consu lar services of the United States were suggested in resolutions adopted here today at the annual convention of the American Manufacturers Export As sociation, he principau . resolution called for placing the entire diplo matic and consular systems, with the exception of ambassadors and minis ters, under proper civil service regula tions; substantially increasing sala ries; abundantly providing wor living expenses and purchasing and main taining "appropriate official resi dences." It also was suggested in the . , hesolutions which the association plans to bring to the attention of con- I gress, that a first sechetary be perma- nently attached to each embassy or legation with life tenure, and that ap ulicants for minor positions be re quired to pass a "severe examina tion" In international law, history, economics and politics. In the cen tral division the temperature was five degrees or more above the normal for the second decade in October. There were maxima well above 90 degrees.
