Turner for con struction of the proposed bridge across Bayou Texar at the foot of CJadjsden st was the best one submitted to the county commissioners at their meet ing yesterday and it was taken un der consideration. .The big was $65, 998. Mr. Turner also bid on the bridge across Jackson's creek, $5,757; and on the Bayou JIarmus bridge, $10, 82. The Southern Construction Co. bids were: FSayou Marcus. $9,559.13 and Jackson's creek,' $4,737.83. All bids were rtjected except Mr. Turner's for Bayou Tcxar. The deputy sheriff bond of K .L. The Webb Kenyon act. prohibiting ine shipment i. interstate commerce of intoxicating lijuors when such liquors were to l ;sed in violation of law, was passed by congress in 1913 over President Taft's veto. Many states in 193 4 5oPted state wide prohibition by constitutional amendment. The Colorado legislature in 1915 made-it unlawful to advertise wine, beer or liquor anywhere in the state. Florida that same year enacted a law forbidding treating. On August 1. 1917 the United States Senate adopted the resolution provid ing for submission to the states of the national prohibition amendment to the constitution and on the following December. Dan Morgan Smith, soldier and irtkinii J i. iidiimii jcu ux null, in speak at the First Methodist churtli this morning and again this evening at the East Hill Baptist church. Th" colonel is here under the auspices of the prohibition law enforcement league and is traveling over the southern states delivering a series ot lectures. In his address, Col. Smith talks as a soldier and of the lift of the soldier in the trenches, in the front Ihva of battle and of the life the soldier leada while behind the lines awaiting the "Zero" hour to go over the top. He draws some wonderful word pictures of what was happening "over there" and of the character of the men who astounded the world when fighting the Hun. Col. Smith is a Floridian. and was educated and practiced law in this state before going to Chicago to take up law practice in that city. AVhile there he made a national reputation as a prosecutor and when the war broke out he went into the .army "be cause", says Col. Smith, "all my fam ily had been fighters, and I was following-the traditions of the family." His record on the field of battle was as great as was his reputation as a law yer in civil life.
