A .much lower Liverpool market than due caused a lower, opening in cotton hexe today but after declines of 12 to 21 points a good demand was met and a sharp, advance resulted which carried the list 3 to 4 points higher than the close of yesterday. May traded off to 36. 35 and then reacted to 36.59. Buy ing was based on the wet weather over a good portion of the belt, prospects of more rain to come and the strong tone of the foreign exchange market. The strength in the foreign exchange the market especially in sterling, caused a buying movement which late in the morning, carried prices 15 to 30 points higher than the finals of yester day, October showing the most activ ity and gains and trading up to 30.80. The large export movement for the day 30,499 bales against 2.455 this date last year and the fact that the bulk of the cotton went to Bremen and to Japanese ports exeated a new demand. At 1 o'clock" the market was firm and 24 to 42 points over the final quota tions of yesterday. New York, Mar. 10. A very sharp break in the Liverpool market was at tributed partly to the advance in the rale of sterling exchange, and the cot ton market opened here with a corre sponding sympathetic drop of fronj 8 to 12 points on"Vall-st buying, which was probably promoted by -the strong opening in the stock market, cotton futures soon hardened and after the first hour were on a level to 3 to 5 points above last night's close. The advance met. realising around 36.20 for May and 30.97 for October or about 18 to 27 points above . last night's 'closing figures. This caused reactions of 10 or 15 points from the best, but except for profit-taking there was evidently no pressure against prices and the market showed a gen erally steady tone early in the noon hour with active months ruling some AMD Jji; l- u WAITED T GET.
