I REMEMBER NOW AND THAT CIGAR 5UGGE5TED IT TO HE 1 COTTON DECLINES ON ENGLISH NEWS Failure of Situation to improve Da presses Market. NEW YORK, April 14. The cotton market held comparatively steady dur ing today's early trading, but the fail ure of the late English news to show any improvement in labor conditions was an unsettling feature and prices -broke under increased offerings to ward the close. July sold off from 12.55 to 12.32 and closed at the lowest, with the general market closing bare ly steady at a net decline of 28 to 40 points. The Liverpool cables were weak, supposedly as a result of increasod nervousness ovt-r labor conditions, but the market here opened steady at a decline of only 1 to 8 points. Reports that the war finance corporation had approved applications for a loan 10 finance exports of 30,000 bales to var ious foreign countries, including Ger many, had a sustaining influence. There may also have been some scat tered buying on reports that since Monday a good business had been done in cotton goods for export to In dia, China, and Red Sea points. Sup port was by no means active or gener al, however, owing to the unfavorable English news, and the market gradu -ally worked lower. Selling became a little more active toward the clos., when southern hedging was more in evidence than earlier in the week, an 1 there was considerable pressure from Wall street sources which may have been connected with an unsettled sen timent in the stock market. May broke to 11.76 and October to 12.77, and tho last prices were the lowest of the day on nearly all positions. The census re port showing 437.933 hales consumed in this country for the month of Man h against 575,78a last year, was a shade under the forecast, but was not con sidered an important influence on to day's market. Private cables from Liverpool said that Manchester trade prospects were favorable but that spot demand was less active. The, gossip is that the 3 000 bales of cotton mentioned in con nection with war finance corporation financing are to be shipped by one . f the southern co-operative marketing organizations.
