NEW YORK, April 23 Railway shares, especially those comprising the investment or dividend-paying divis ion, had their Inning during today's short but lively market session rising spiritedly to the discomforture of the shorts. . The market lA general was disposed to enhance gains of the last few days, although some of the favorite issues In the steel, equipment and related groups forfeited part of their advance on the week end realizing movement. This was especally noticeable in the motor and oil issues, although latest advices concerning both industrials were of a favorable character. Some of the miscellaneous specialties. Including the food Issues, derived support from better trad reports. The bond market was fairly active, most branches of the list holding steady, except liberty issues, where several minor recessions were regis tered. Total sales par value, aggregat ed $5,575,000,: Foreign exchange was mostly strong especially the British rate, with de mand sterling at 3.94, the highest quo tation in many months, but consider ably under the maximum of a little more than a year ago. The noteworthy feature of the clear ing house statement was the decrease of. $68,630,000 in actual loans and dis counts. Net demand deposits decrease! about $42,550,000 and a cash contrac tion of approximately $8,850,000 re duced excess reserves to about $9, 600,000. HIGHER TREND IN COTTON MARKET Dispatches Indicating Hope of Settling Miners' Strike Has Good Effect. NEW ORLEANS, April 23. The higher trend of prices in tha cotton market today was mainly due to dis patches from England Indicating that there was a good chance o settling the coal strike this coming week, al though the continued wet weather In the eastern half of the cotton region, &nh claims of a better spot demand in the markets of Texas contributed to the steadiness. Late in the day prices were 17 to 19 points up with May at 11.77 and July at 12.27. The close showed gains of 10 to"l3 points. While the-weather was better over the west ern half of the cottorr region, this improvement was offset by the storm area in the northwest and the cold wave back of it, leading to the fear that the coming week x might bring more bad weather to the belt, Small recessions were caused 'by cables from Bremen, claiming that German spin ners were welf supplied with cotton but the effect of this was lost "when reports were received that Grmany had given in to the demands of the allies regarding transfers of gold. Messagges from Texas spot markets said that much of the spot demand of the last day or two appeared to come from large concerns who to all appear ances were buying against cotton which they sold ahead. This early covering of forward spot committments made a favorable Impression toward the close. MIAMI AQUARIUM HAS 140 FISH SPECIMENS MIAMI, April 23. Director L. D. NEW YORK. April 23. Reflecting an improved sentiment . In connection wltl reparations and the British min ers' strike, the cotton market todaj was quite active and generally strong er. The opening showed an advance ol 1 to 6 points and, ln subsequent deal ings the market sold 2 to 26 points above the previous night. May led the upturn with an advance to 12.06, based on large covering orders by Wa!I street houses. July sold as high as 12.72, October J3.34, and ' Decembej 13.80, and while some of the (improve ment was subsequently lost under profit-taking in the final hour, ths market neverthelejs closed very steady at a net advance of 11 to 18 points. A broadening of outside speculative In terest was one of the bull factors ol tho day, the public being interested in new crops "because of the unfavorabl weather reports from the south. ; An other buying movement was the re ported Increase of foreign demand fot spot cotton in the south. Offerings were comparatively light throughoul the day, the trade evidently anticipat ing a favorable outcome of the Euro pean, problems and being influenced also by the Improvement recently noted in Manchester business. Do mestic trade Reports for tho week were better and it is understood whiit mills had considerable stocks of good. they are not well supplied with raw cotton and with any moderate distri bution of goods would be forced in the, market ta replenish stocks of raw materials. Sales of print cloths tt Fall River for the week were 95,000 pieces, while curtailment, owing to a holiday last Tuesday, amounted to ful ly 180,000 pieces. INGRAM OPTICAL CO.
