NEW YORKTCOTTON QUIET AND STEADY Some Scattered guying on Belief That Mining Dispute Would Be Settled. NEW YORK, April 23. More favor able Liverpool advices led to an open ing advance in the cotton market to day but failed to stimulate any general buying owing to better weather con ditions In the south and less encourag ing reports as to the prospects for an agreement on war reparations. After selling at 12.74 early July eased off to 12.62 and closed at 12.67 compared with 12.64 yesterday. The general market closed quiet and steady, net five points higher to four points lower. The mar ket opened steady at an advance of 7 to 10 points in response to the firmer English cables and reports of better British coal strike. There was probably some scattered buying on the belief that should the YAS. I CAN T HEAR A THING WITH OUT THIS PLEGGEO OlD TRuMPIT' WHAT SAV ? This checked the local advance with prices later easing off under small of ferings in the absence of any Import- I ant support with scattered liquida tion promoted Dy reports mat uer raan reparations proposals were unsat isfactory and later London advices re porting that British coal miners had refused government settlement offers. May eased off from 12.22 to ! 12.12 and October from 13.27 to 13.22 with some positions showing slight rallies at the close on covering. General business was very quiet dur ing the entire day with the market cor respondingly Sensitive to small orders. A local report pointed to an average reduction of 30.8 per cent in acreage and of 30 per cent in the use of ferti lizers .but was without any special inr fluence. Late Washington advices said that advices to the federal reserve board indicated a reduction of about 25 per cent in acreage. SMALL ADVANCES INN. O.COTTON Periods When Little Real Strength Was Displayed. NEW ORLEANS, April 28. Small advances were again the rule in the cotton market today but there were periods when little real strength was displayed and' at one stage the most active months were 1 to 2 points un der the close of yesterday. Late prices were at net gains for the session of 2 to 7 points with May at 11.77. At the highest of the day the list was 10 to 12 points over the final prices of yes terday. May traded as high as 11.82t Early steadiness was due to better cables than expected and the better Liverpool market was due to the ' re port that the British coal strike was all but settled and the lowering of the Bank of England rate to six and a half per cent. After the first upward move ment the market sagged and toward mid-season reached Its lowest levels on the better weather over the belt and the forecast of generally fair weather for practically the entire cotton region. In the late trading there was re newed buying for a while on the re port that the threatened seamen's strike in this county had -been com promised but this report did not have full effect because of reports from Liv erpool just on the dose that the coal miners had again rejected proposals to end their strike.
