Shortage of wheat at terminal markets led to a decided upward swing in wheat prices today for the May delivery in partic ular. There was a buoyant close at 2 to 8 Signet advance . Corn gained to 1 cents , and oats to cent. In provisions the finish varied from 124 cents decline to 15 cents advance. REACTION IN STOCK MARKET Trading Was Attended By a Succes sion of Confusing Advances. NEW YORK, May 3. Trading in the stock market today was attended hv a succession of confusing advances, ' reactions and irregular rallies the net result'save among a few of the more, seasoned Issues, being rather inclusive. Dealings fell considerably below the! large total of the previous session but! the movement was no less compre-' hensive, embracing in addition to the usual favorites, many unclassified shares. The bulk of tho again centered, however, in the oils, motors and steel and shippings. Mexican petroleum maintained its; recent record for erratic leadership, ' declining 2 1-2 points after an early, gain of almost 2 points and finishing near the low of the day. Other oils were equally uncertain and the mo tors group showed mixed changes at the end. . , l . Passing of the dividend on cotton oil ' preferred resulted In a, break of four points for that stock and more or less unsettlement throughout the food di vision. Bel gian, Italian, Dutch and Swiss rates also rose irregularly, the advance sug gesting increasing confidence in an early solution of the German repara tions controversy. Bonds were firm to strong in the main, most of the liberty group rfsing moderately with further strength in speculative rails. Belgium sixes feat ures ' the international division at a smart advance. Total sales, par values $13,175,000. STEADY UNDERTONE NEW YORK COTTON NEW YORK, May 3. A further ad vance during today's earlier trading in the cotton market met realizing and scattered southern selling. Prices eased off in consequence with July selling down from 13.22 to 12.94 but showed a steady undertone closing at 12.07. The general market closed steady at a decline of 3 points to an advance of 2 points. The opening reflected disappoint ment over the showing of Liverpool. There had been reports here late yes terday of buying on better prospects for a settlement of the British coal strike. This morning cables, however, were lower than due and private ad vices said mill curtailment in Man chester was increased because of labor troubles. This led to scattering liqui dation which accounted for the opening decline of five to 10 points while there was Wso some pressure against May owing to the circulation of notices representing nearly 3,000 bales. The spot month offerings were quickly absorbed however, while buy ing of later months was promoted by complaints of continued low tempera tures in the belt with further rains east of the river, the firmness of for eign exchange rates, and the better tone reported Jn stocks and grain. May sold up to 12.79 and October to 13.90 or 13 to 16 points 'net higher. A few stop-orders were uncovered on the ad vance and after their execution there was scattered realizing with some local and Willi Street pressure accompanied by predictions that further advances would prevent the expected curtail ment of acreage. The lowest prices of the day were touched in the late trad ing with May selling at 12.50 and Oc tober at 13.60, but there was support from recent buyers on declines and last prices showed rallied of some 10 or 15 points from the lowest. A New Or leans report published before the open ing Indicated 30 per cent reduction In acreage-. Brokers reported a more general business today with Indica tions of a divided sentiment above the 13 cent level for July. This rally did not hold because it met extensive hedge selling and large offerings which were set down as coming from spot interests. Around the opening there I were declines of four to sir points In sympathy with a poor Liverpool but almost immediately a buying . move ment was Inaugurated and it carried the market 11 to 16 points over the close of yesterday, July trnding up to 12.80. The hedge selling was felt as the market advanced and it finally had the effect of choking off the specula , tiv demand. Toward noon Drices were at their lowest. 11 to 12 points-j under the last quotations of yesterday t with July down to 12.53. j In the late tr-ading the market ran into another period of steadiness which appeared to be altogether due to ex pectations that the weekly crop re ports from the government tomorrow would be unfavorable because of the low temperatures and rainy weather of the week. July closed at 12.64. Nearly Died on Birthday "On my last birthday, eight months ago, I had another close call. We had just finished dinner.
