CHICAGO GRAIN MARKET.
CHICAGO, May 4. Kansas reports
of free selling on the part of growers
had much to do today with a sharp
downturn in wheat prices here. The
market closed weak at 2 1-2 to 4 3-4
cents net lower; corn lost 1 1-8 to
17-8 and oats 7-8 to 1 7-8. In pro
visions there was a net advance of
five to 30 cents.

NEW ORLEANS. May 4. Weather
conditions ruled the fluctuations in cot
ton today, small gains resulting in the
eariy trading from the cold weather over
the belt while in the late .trading tha
market sagged under the forecast f
warmer weather over, the greater part f
the belt. The weekly crop" reports from
the government "wre considered unfavor
able but resulted . In little , new buying.
The market closed at the lowest of the
day, at net losses, of 11 to 14 points, with
July at 1253. .' . .. . . , ' ,-; ,
With minimum temperatures last night
ranging from 42 to 58' degrees over all
but the southern -portion of Texas the
early - session : heard ; much complaint of
poor i germination - and slow . growth of
young plants from . private sources , but
after' advances of 5 to 10 points the marr
ket quited down and acquired a tendency
to sag, July traded as high as 12.74
during this steady period."
. Private reports of poor progress, by the
crop were fully dorne out by the official
returns but appeared to have been dis
counted. The forecast called ; for dry
Weather over the cotton region which,
taken in connection with the outlook for
higher temperatures was considered very
favorable and likely to cause the crop to
make up some of its backwardness.
After-mid-session ,the market had an
easy undertone.

Wage Reduction by Stel Corporation
Has Littie Effect on Market.
NEW YORK, May 4. The trend of
today's stock market was somewhat
disappointing to those who . expected
that dealings would be governed to a
preponderant degree by the 20 per cent
reduction announced, by- the " United
States Steel' eorporatiqh after yester
day's Session.: . '-
Steels and kindred issues were quite
active and firm to strong at the outset,
but yielded in prominence and strength
later to various other stocks which
derived their chief support from pro
fessional sources.
Although the steeLwage cut had been
clearly foreshadowed, it was properly
regarded as a constructive measure.
Its significance, it was argued in many
quarters, however, would have carried
greater weight attended by a down
ward revision of prices.
U. S. Steel common scored an early
advance of nearly 1 point, most of
which was canceled at midday. It
made a new high quotation in the fi
nal hour, when short covering was most
urgent, and closed at a gain of 1 1-4
