We had no idea that we were this_far,along on the road to fascisrh. These Communists were arrested admittedly without any evidence of criminal wrong-doing. The Communist Party of the United States is almost thirty years old. In all that time, this organization has never wavered from its long range objective of socialism—nor has any secret ever been made of this fact- The Communist Party has also stated clearly that it will place this socialist objective on "the order of the day" only when a majority of the American people are for socialism. It is asl mere chance that these asr.ests, under a grand jury indictment that has been hanging for more than a year, come at a time when the events in Germany have been blown up to the full proportions of a war crisis. Nor is it any accident that these arrests are timed with the opening of the New Party na tional convention in Philadelphia. These arrests are an act of political desper ation. They reveal the mood of a bipartisan ad ministration which is ready to resort to fascism in order to retain power, in order to further its objectives of world domination in behalf of the economic tyrants whom it serves. July 24.1948 Edition We say emphatically that the defense of these arrested men is not merely the task of their fellow Communists. W« learned that it was many more than the Communists, whom Hitler first attacked, who had to fight Hitlerism eventually. No democratic American can waver in this fight because he too may be called a Commu nist. The cry "Release the Communists!" must bo the slogan for all who love American freedom. President Truman and Attorney General Tom Clark must hear this cry from millions. Let's move into action quickly- Wires, phone calls, delegations must pour into Washington without delay.
