Drive toward war fattens monopolies THE other day the Federal Trade Commission—an in dependent Government agency not yet corrupted by bi-partisan appointees—sent a special mes sage to Congress warning that the growth of monopoly threat ened this country with collectiv ism—with the extinction of com petitive enterprise. This warning will fall on deaf ears. The bipartisan Congress and the bipartisan Administration will not tackle the fundamental problems of monopoly control of our economy, because both old parties are the servants of mo nopoly. Eight months ago in another special session called by Truman the Congress passed and Tru man signed a law giving the mo nopoly corporations power to es tablish cartels for the control of basic raw materials. This law gives big steel and big oil the power to regiment all of Ameri can business dependent on oil and steel. It gives them the power to create further shortages and through shortages to raise prices. * • • AT THE LAST session of Con gress a bill was passed and signed by the President which gave to Secretary of Defense For restal the power to determine priorities for steel. This was a major step in the creeping coup d’etat by which the bankers and militarists are gaining control over our civilian economy. They were, thwarted in World War II by Roosevelt, but they have been assisted by Truman. The National Association of Manufacturers and iis political stooges, both Republicans and G.LK. Democrats, who cry "Commun ism" every lime a measure es sential to protect the people is proposed, are the real advocates of collectivization. The only po litical parly in the United States today which is dedicated to pre serving independent business en terprise and to protecting work ers. farmers, and consumers from monopoly is the new parly, the Progressive Party, The men who cry loudest against “regimentation” here at home are blatantly demanding “regimentation” in Western Eu rope. The truth is that they are ardent advocates of regimenta tion both at home and abroad. Today Averill Harriman, Dem ocrat, and Paul Hoffman, Repub lican, are in Europe trying to force reluctant governments to adopt detailed four-year plans for production and foreign trade plans which will serve interna tional big business rather than the great mass of people either here or abroad. The attempted regimentation of Europe is being carried out under the same bi partisan auspices as the relatively silent regimentation of America. Taylor's brother in Congress race SAN MATEO, Calif. Paul Taylor, a railroad engineer and brother of Sen. Glen H. Taylor, Henry Wallace’s running mate, will run for Congress on the Pro gressive Party ticket. He will oppose Rep. Zack Z. The gathering of followers of Smith’s Christian Nationalist Cru sade will be held in Kiel Auditor ium, Aug. 20-21. The only other speaker from Illinois will be Andrew B. McAl ister, head of an outfit called the Pro-American Information Bu reau, of Hinckley, 111. Smith promises his followers that delegates to the convention will hear “a well known and prominent American” who “has held one of the most important positions in public life.” This speaker’s identity will not be dis closed until the last moment, ac cording to Smith.
