He came over to get Tony Chandler, who the local police had arrested, and who is wanted in Birmingham for breaking into Southern cars Chandler was carried to Bir mingham on Wednesday night. Conductor John T. Elliott has the heartfelt sympathy of many friends in the death of his little two-year-old daughter, Ida C, which occurred at the infirmary last Wednesday. The body of the little girl was carried to their old home at Winona, where it was tenderly laid to rest on Thursday by many sorrowing and sympathizing friends. Supt. EL Smith has resumed his position with Mr. Warren Gardner in the ware house busi ness and will be glad for his friends to call on him and to bring him their cotton. He will be with Mr. Gardner throughout the winter and will be glad to serve his friends. Numerous inquiries relative to the expiration of the game law have been received in this office as the hunting season advances and from The Dispatch's inves tigation the time limit is on the 15th of the present month. There are-any number of quail this season and the sport behind the dog and gun promises to be ex ceptionally fine. The fact that Congress is soon to convene and that the First District's able representative, Mr. Candler, is to return to Washington, where he will be on the ground and can look after his District's interests, leads the people of the Steens section to hope that he will succeed in hav ing the Steens free rural route established. Mr. Candler will be requested to get the route es tablished as soon as he returns to Washington. The policy of consolidation which has been so successfully carried out in the Mt. Vernon school in Eastern Lowndes is to be followed by the Eubanks school and the Rural Hill schoo uniting forces. The new schoo will be known as the Rural Hil school and-it will be enlarged to meet the demand for increased room and better school facilities Prof. Hull, one of the ablest edu cators of the county, will be the principal of the school and he will be assisted by Miss Rieve land Ellis, a capable and accom dished teacher. The new school will open on Nov. 2nd, and it is urged that every pupil be present. The Dispatch has some good news for the people of the Wood neighborhood this morning in the announcement that their free rural route for the daily delivery of their mail will begin on Mon day, Nov. 2nd. This announce ment was received last Friday from an official communication from the postoffice department at Washington and it gives cause for rejoicing throughout the Wood section. The boxes will be ordered at once and every pre paration made for the service to begin. The name of the carrier is not yet announced but it will be made public in ample time for the commencement of tue ser vice. Tolson, of the Tolson- Todd Company, well rememoer- ed here was shot and killed in Van Buren, Ark., a few days ago by Dr. Parchmont. Tolson's name was connected with that of ;9 Dr. Parch mont's daughter and H this resulted in the killing. Miss Ruby Miller, the beauti ful eighteen year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Evan M. Barber, of Biloxi, is being boomed for speaker of the next house. He is repre sented as coming from South Mississippi and is going before the State as that section's candi date. Hon. Em mett Thomas and Hon. Sydney Smith are regarded as the leading candidates for this responsible position. Scooba is to have telephone connection with Meridian. This suggests that some enterprising telephone company should run its lines down the M. & O. and give East Mississippi connection with Memphis, St. Louis and other cities. Columbus negroes, or negroes who have resided here, are mak ing quite a reputation for them selves as lawbreakers in various sections of the land. The negro who killed a policeman in Atlan ta a few days ago formerly work ed on the sewerage force here under Mr. Robt. J. Gunter and the body of Sam Newby, another Columbus negro, arrived here on Thursday from St. Louis where he was killed in a battle with po lice officers while resisting ar rest. An officer was shot down in this affray and Newby's broth er was also in the battle. The negro was buried at Frierson's Chapel on the Waverly road on Thursday afternoon. A Great Sensation.
