their influence, if you could realize
how much depends upon the conduct
of mothers toward these things in
this city, you would simply be start

I have but little fear of the blind

Take for in
the influence of the homes where
card playing becomes the center of
attraction and social drinking holds
its sway. I know men upon whose
shoulders I can place my hand In a
few hours who are physical, mental
and moral wrecks, doomed for life
and damned for eternity, who can
unquestionably date the beginning of
their lives of vice to evenings spent
in their own mothers' parlors.
"When Brother Cates was in a
meeting in a town in the western
part of our sjpte a few weeks ago, a
little eight year old boy came to him
sobbing his little heart out and told
Brother Cates that he wanted to be
a Christian but could not. His ex
planation was that he could not quit
cards and that at midnight he would
get up and turn the light on in his
room and sit alone for two hours and
play. The citizens stated that he
would go to the depot and hire ne
groes to gamble with him. Brother
Cates put him up on the platform
and had him to state this to the con
gregation. A few pews back from
where the child stood and told "his
awful story of the grip of gambling
into which he had fallen, sat his own
mother who had argued for the social
card game and had on her center table
a number of decks and entertained
every week. Then Brother Cates
asked every one who had ever gamb
led to stand up. There were a great
many who rose. Then he asked
those who had learned to gamble at
the social card table in the home to
sit down, and they all sat down ex
cept a few scattered over the congre
gation, that you could count on yorr
hand. The mother of this child went
home and burned her cards, but why
burn them now when she had already
made a gambler of her little boy, and
to his dying day he has got to fight
the gambling demon.
"Now, your influence in religion is
the thing that I wish I could speak
to you about for an hour. I am not
talking about religion in China, but
religion in Hattiesburg—religion in
your own room, your own home. I
believe, my mothers, that if you will
go home from this meeting this after
noon and call your children around
your knee and read to them from the
sacred leaves of God's book and bow
with them and dedicate
Hannah did Samuel to God,
will come a day when you can re-'
joice in seeing your sons and your
daughters going out from
homes to stand for Christ and stand I
for religion and stand for your pur
ity. You may amass wealth and ac
cumulate property and become popu
lar in social circles, but if you sit
dowii in ever so fine a room and wait
into the still hours of the night for
the unsteady footfalls of the drunken
son. or watch with suspicious
the conduct of your daughter,—your
palace will be converted into an in
