Special to the Daily Progress. Jackson, Nov. 29.—The soil survey of the Mississippi started last year by the bureau of soils, department of ag riculutre, is progressing slowly. Messrs. Smith and Carter, represent atives of the bureau, are now at work in Yazoo county covering a space of territory fifty miles from ; east to west and twenty miles from ! north to south, and as the lands are surveyed they make maps designating the varieties of soils, topography, etc. HENRY GORDON HELD For the Grand Jury For Killing Matt Duckett. Summit, Miss., Nov. 29.—Henry Gordon, the negro who shot aud killed Matt Duckett in a quarrel at a railroad camp near this place , has j been held over to await the action of j the grand jury at the regular term of the Pike county circuit court. Longino, governor of the state of Mississippi: Yorr undersigned petitioners citizens of said state petition you and ask the pardon of Nepolean Whittle, who was at the May term of the circuit conrt of the first district of Perry county. Miss., j convicted of assault and battery with intent to kill, and sentenced to serve a term of two years in the state peniten tiary, and we give as onr reason for executive clemency the following: 1st. Nepolean Whi'tle entered a plea of guilt to said ?harge with the hope and expectation of having executed clemency at yonr hands. 2nd. There were mitigating cir , cuxnstances connected with his com j mitt j n g the offence and had they been introduced before a jury in evidence the said Nepolean vvhittle might have been acquitted 3rd. The said Whittle has always up to the committing of this offence been an honest, law abiding, industrious negro, has never been in any trouble or convicted before. 4th. His health is very poor; has now a dangerous and painfnl constitu tional disease and in the opinion of your petitioners as well as medical advisors! that if he is permitted to remain in prison will die before his time expires. 5th. He has a wife and seven small children in destitute circumstances who are badly in need of his help and presence. 6tb. Because since being in the state penitentiary he has caused the official no trouble, but has been industrious and his conduct becoming. Commencing Sunday, November 9. 1902.
