Gates preached a powerful sermon at the Methodist church Sunday on the subject of Good Roads and was by far the best address on that subject de livered In Starke. He Introduced the subject by reading several passages of Scripture referring to that subject and sounded the keynote to the whole sub ject by saying: "Public highways are an Index of civilization" and "damages resulting from bad roads greatly re tards civilization." Among other things, the preacher said: "The people in mountain places where there are no roads are 100 years behind the times. Moonshine whiskey here finds its home. Our duty is to build good roads to our churches, to schools, to markets, so that the peo ple can go to church, the children to schools and each in turn thus caused to look up and thereby Improve our citizenship. As we build good roads we Increase national wealth and our own health, prosperity and years of life. "Today many In Europe are travel ing over roads built by the Roman em peror to send his legions of soldiers. These roadg were built to last in early times. When a king wished to visit some other part of his kingdom a large force was sent on before to make a good road for him to travel. These roads afterward became highways along which the gospel of Christ has been carried to many parts of the world. "In our country the pioneer followed the Indians' trail and roads followed and then peace and prosperity follow ed in its train. The hills should be leveled with purity and the valleys of sin filled up, crooked ways made straight, when our country will blos som as a rose, churches and schools be filled, highways of peace and pros perity abound. "God uses the material things of the world to enhance the spiritual. "May all these roads lead to the wel fare of mankind and to the honor and glory of God." CENTENARY OF THACKERY.
