Court Miscellany. Dr. A. J. Weissinger and G. L. Dar den have decided to add another sto ry to the building to be used as an j office by the doctor and The Times Promoter. This will make the buil ding two stories and a basement. The top floor will be let to tenants. Judge W. A. Roane, District Attor ney H. D. Stevens and Stenographer Frank Ellis, the different ports of the court machinery, were all present Monday. !•; There are yet several continued cases on the docket in which Judge Roane is disqualified to set on account of his having been district attorney before being appointed judge. Atty. J. F. Dean, of Senatobia, has been appointed to serve during the trial of these eases. Judge Dean's official ac tions meet the approval of the public. :«! •: ,o: a: Attorneys £rank Montgomery, of Tunica; St. John Waddell and A. S. Buchanan, of Memphis; O. G. John ston, of Friars Point, were among the visiting attorneys here this week. •: !• m Some amusement was created in the courtroom Wednesday when Guy and Lynn Riley, two white boys were arraigned in court Wednesday on a charge of assault and battery. J. J. Evans, the prosecuting witness, an nounced that as he and the Riley's were neighbors he had decided to withdraw the charges, and as he was the aggrieved party District Attorney Stevens agreed to nol pros the case. The boys were called before the bar and lectured by Judge Roane on the futility of settling grievances by fight ing. The judge then sought from the boys a promise to suppress their bel ligerent tendencies. "We'll let him alone if he will let our hogs run out, like others do," said the oldest boy. Their father was then called up and promised that fighting would cease and the boys were dismissed. The jury that brought in a verdict of guilty against C. B. Mooney, for retailing, broke a record long prevail ing in DeSoto county by convicting a white man. So far as we are able to recall, it is the first conviction of a white man in this county in six years. Up to Thursday morning seven bills of indictment had been returned by the grand jury. Numerous compliments were heard on the charge Judge Roane delivered Monday. Blind tigers, night riding and a few similar crimes he dealt on with especial force. He also said that Gov. Noel had written to him in ref erence to the hanging of the negro Jackson for attempting to steal cot ton. According to Dr. T. M. Jones, coun ty health officer, there is a wide in fection of smallpox in the territory between Pleasant Hill and Capleville. He was summoned to examine a sua picious case near Capleville Wednes day and found eight infected points and about twenty-five cases around and to the south of that town. The patients have been quarantined and all precautionary measures to prevent a further spread of the pest will be taken. One Point of Infection. , Dr. Flaherty, the government tick man who arrived here two weeks ago and has been canvassing the eastern portion of the county in a hunt for places infected with the cattle tick, reported last Saturday that he had, so far, located only one point of in fection in the county. At Hudson Bros.' place across Coldwater near Alphaba a few ticks were found. Mr. Hudson thinks the insects were brought to his place by a bunch of cattle that he bought in Tate county. A canvass of the western portion of the county will be made by Dr. Fla herty this week and he doesn't an ticipate finding any infected cattle there. He is more than pleased with the outlook in DeSoto county and says it is by far the cleanest territory in the quarantined section.
