Holmes, of Oak ville, Tenn., were visitors here this ' week. Mrs. J. W. Lee, of Batesville, visi ted Mr. and Mrs. N. M. Whitley re cently. - Mrs. Jessie Raines, of Memphis, visited her mother, Mrs. M.*1S. Powel, this week. Postmaster A. B. Clifton, who has been confined to his room for several days, is able to be out again. Drs. W. S. Weissinger and A. L. Emerson attended the Tri-State Med ical Association in Memphis this week. Mrs. Mildred Farrington and Miss Nellie White returned Wednesday from several months' stay in Mont eagle and Atlanta. Mr. E. T. Wilkinson, who was con fined to his room several day# last week by an attack*of rheumatism, is now up, but is unable to use his right arm. Mr. and Mrs. Newton, Black of Memphis; Mr. J. H. Johnston and family, of Clarksdale; Winston Smith, of the University; Tom Wilkinson, of Memphis, were among the Thanks giving visitors here. Miscellaneous Matters Born to Mr. and Mrs. R. P. Cooke last Friday night, a fine boy. Rev. O. W. Bradley announces that he will preach at Horn Lake next Sunday at 11 o'clock. Lula Journey, a negro girl about sixteen years old, died suddenly at her home near here last Saturday night from the effects of too much gin. She is said to ha,ve been drink ing around town Saturday evening ttjvT witnesses claim she imbibed a half gallon of gin. She was finally induced to go home and Sunday morn ing when her family attempted to awaken her she was found to be dead. JiMtice Phillips held an inquest Sun day and the jury rendered a verdict in accordance with the evidence. The fine of $500, assessed against Tom Cowan for manslaghter, was paid Monday and he was set free. Several new cases of smallpox are reported by Dr. Jones, county health officer, in the infected area in the northern part of the county. How several patients have been dis ever, charged, so the number suffering from the pest has not materially increased. There are about fifty patients. We received, too late for publica tion last week, a news letter from Cockrum. In addition to coming too late the letter was unsigned and so could not be published. We would greatly appreciate a letter from each community every week, but they must reach this office by Thursday morning and must be signed by the writer, althongli the name will be left out of the paper if the writer desires. k*: Dr. H. B. Leonard, who has been atationed in White county, Tenn., in the work of tick eradication, came here Monday to succeed Dr. Flaherty in the work of locating tick infested points in DeSoto county. Dr. Fla herty was transferred to Pennsylva nia, where an alarming epidemic of the foot and mouth disease has broken out among the cattle. Dr. Leonard will finish inspecting the county, cov ering the western portion, which Dr. Flaherty did not visit. The remains of a little son J. S. Danner were brought here yesterday from Clarketon, Ark., and interred in the California cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Danner were formerly residents of this county and have many friends here who sympathize with them in their bereavement. by 9. C. E. E. The little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Jones, who is suffering from an attack of scarlet fever is improving. Mr. R. L. Kirkwood has contracted with W. T. Lewis to construct a nice cottage on a lot purchased from T. J. O'Donnell near the railroad tank. The building will be occupied by Mrs M. L. Bazzell, a sister of Mr. Kirk wood, who now lives at Water Valley. vs. the ter A petition will be presented at the meeting of the Methodist conference at Water Valley next week to have Hernando made a station and use all the time of one minister, instead of dividing time with Hinds Chapel, as is now the case. The petition also urges the reappointment of Rev. O. W. Bradley, who, together with his wife, is exceedingly popular with members of all denominations here.
