Southern Farm Market
Summary
Southern farm markets during
the third week of November were
featured by higher prices on
southeastern cattle, cotton and eggs,
according to the Production and
Marketing Association.
A strong demand for medium and
better qualities of cotton and the
prospective short crop continued j
to be strengthening fac for cot
ton, with prices again at new
highs. Ten market sales totaled
around 227.C00 bales. Farmers are
selling freely with very little go
ing into the government loan and
purchase program.
Price trends on cattle continued
mixed. In the southeastern area,
prices turned upward from 25 cents
to $1.50. Common and Medium
grades led the advance ,but Good
and Choice also gained with year
lings and calves at $13.75 to
$14.75. Montgomery, steady on
slaughter stock, was strong on
stockers. Nashville, mostly 25 cents
higher on the lightest weekly run
since late August had a steer top
of $17.00. Baltimore was steady and
active oh steers, but fclow and 25
to 50 cents lower on cows .
A few more hogs turned up at
southeastern plants, mainly from
inshipments. However, demand re
mained as broad as ever and prices
steady at ceilings for the bulk of
runs. In .the midwest, receipts
showed an appreciable increase.
Poultry receipts were moderate
to liberal. Richmond slightly
weaker, quoted fryers at 28 to 30
