Record Number "Wildcat" Wells Seek State's Oil With 28 wildcats drilling this week—ni'tre than at any one time in Mississippi history—State Gai. and Oil Supervisor H. M. Morse quoted figures showing that the search for oil has led to all but four of the counties of the state at some time in “wildcatting” history. A second test in Tippah county, in northeast Mississippi, took the total of current tests to 38 and broke the old state record. Mr. Morse said. However, there have been 18 to 22 “wildcats” drilling almost every week of 1948. Only counties in which no oil or drilling has been done are Tunica in the far northwestern corner of the state; Coahoma and Quitman counties in the upper delta and Ben ton county, in the far north cent ral area. Each of the other 78 counties of Mississippi’s total of 82 has had at least one wildcat drilled, some of them* many years ago but in most cases during the recent ac tivity. No complete tabulation is availa ble for 1948. Mr. Morse said, point ing out that such a list would be of little use now because with the present activity the picture changes from week to week; but he cited figures from the annual report of the Mississippi Scouts and Lands men’s Association, to show that as of the first of this year, there were only six of the 78 counties that had but one well each drilled in them and only ten that had but two. This rating has changed in some and has prospects of changing in others be fore the first of the year, Mr. Morse said. I I According to the tabulation, more wells had been drilled, to the first of this year, in Yazoo than in any , other county; *77 wells of all kinds ! had been drilled there, counting, field wells and wildcats. Lincoln couty rated second with 220 wells, of all kinds, and its to tal is sure to be far heavier by the end of the year as there are now more than 225 producing wells in the county’s two oil fields, in addi tion to wildcats drilled this year and before. Jasper county rates third in total wells drilled to the first of this year, with 187; Adams county was fourth with 177; Wayne was fifth with 158 and Hinds was sixth with 155—more than any county in the state with no succesful drilling for oil. Rankin, with 126 wells, and Madison, with 83. ran next. With wildcatting spread throug out the state, Mr. Morse said this year’s total of “exploratory dril ling" will exceed that of even the high year, 1947; for instance of 18 permits issued by his office in the last two weeks, ten have been for wildcat wells. So far there have been 97 wildcats completed this year, and Mr. Morse predicts that of the batch now drilling, at least 15 will be completed by the first of the year, to top last year's total of 101. There are a number of important deadline dates on GI Bill benefits which World War II veterans should keep in mind, Veterans Ad ministration officials pion tout. ' I GI education and training bene fits have two deadlines, one to en ter training and another to com plete training. Education or train ing must be started within four years after discharg eor by July 25, 1951, whichever is later. As a general rule, education or training must be completed not later than July 25, 1956. The ex ceptions from the general rule are veterans who enlisted or reinlisted before October 6, 1946. These men figure deadlines on GI Bill bene fits from the date of their discharg es and may start and complete their training later than other vet- s erans. Veterans may apply for guaran teed or insured GI loans for the use of buying or building homes, farms or business up unt'l July 25, iya,. Veterans who were discharged on or before July 25, 1947, can apply for readjustment allowances until two years after their date of dis charge. However, no readjustment allowances are payable after July i 25, 1952. I There is no deadline on the time a veteran has to apply for medical care or hospitalization. He may do this any time, during his life. The same holds true for filing a claim for disability compensation or pen sion. Veterans studying under the GI Bill who want to transfer to an other school at the end of the fall semester should notify the Vet erans Administration at least 30 cays before they intend to make the change. To enroll at a new school, VA explained, the student-veteran ! reeds a supplemental certificate of eligibility. He also needs a state j rnent from his present school show ing that his progress there is satis factory. Veterans who have appointments for services authorized by the Vet erans Administration are urged to appear at the appointed time. I VA said veterans should make j every effort to keep their medical or dental examinations at the time specified. These examinations are set on a regular schedule. When & veteran fails to appear, he wastes not only the time of VA personnel preparing to give the examination or treatment, but prevents them from re-scheduling some other vet eran for that period. Broken appointments also result! in unnecessary delays in medical and dental care to all veterans of the surrounding area and reduces the number of veterans who can be served by VA.
