At# You Ready to Meet Christ?
B* Mary Farley
Oh, Christians, are you ready
to meet Him today? Let us search
ourselves carefully. Watch our daily
conduct. We are to live each day
as those who expect to see the Lord,
May the Lord help us truly to be
wise stewards according to His
words*of the Lord Jesus himself in
Watch therefore, for ye * know
not what hour your Lord doth come.
But know this, that if the good man
of the house had known in what
watch the thief would come, he
would have watched and would not
have suffered his house to be brok
en up. Therefore, be ye also ready,
for in such an hour as ye think not
the Son of Man cometh, who then
is a faithful and wise servant, whom
his Lord hath made ruler over his
household, to give them meat in
due season? Blessed is that ser
vant, whom his Lord when he
cometh shall find so doing. May
Gad help us to believe his word,
i trus his promise, and be ready
for his coming.

HERE’S HOW ...
MAKE A WORK BENCH
A work bench, sturdy
enough to stand hard usage,
. and providing ample working
space, is a must for all home
craftsmen. After the basic
bench is made, the craftsman
begins to add the “extra*” to
accommodate h i s specialized
tools and equipment.
The completed bench (A) is
shown from the rear, so that
the diagonal brace can be seen.
The front has no brace to im
pede the workman.
The basic structure is a
frame (B) of 2 x 6 lumber:
t.vo pieces 58 inches long and
two pieces 24 inches long. The
2x4 legs, each 32 inches long,
are fastened into the frame
with carriage bolts, one 6-inch
bolt and two 4-inch bdlts to
each corner. Holes %-ipjch in
diameter are bored to accom
modate the bolts.
A *2 x 4 crossrail bolted to
the legs at each end of the
bench adds stability and a
base for the two 2x6 pieces
that serve as a shelf for tools
The top is made of 2-inch
plank, two pieces of 2 x 10,
and one of 2 x 6, each 60
inches long. The top is fas
tened to the frame members
with 3-inch wood screws, coun

Land Use, Fertilizer, And
Erosion Control Lead In
In applying conservation and
fertility improvement plans, far
mers in Rankin County Soil Con
servation District have a choice
between alternative combination#
of land use, fertilizer applications
and erosion control practices. With
in limits, they may choose between
different rotations and different
fertilizer applications combined
with different erosion control prac
tices and still farm the land in ac
cordance with the soil capabilities.
While land use in accordance with
soil capabilities and appropriate
fertilization is basic to soil conser
vation, these measures need to be
supplemented by supporting con
servation practices such as con
touring, sod waterways, mulching,
drainage, flumes, etc., if soil is to
be conserved and improved most
Successful conservation farming
(that system which will increase
total farm production, build up soil
fertility, control erosion and max
imize earnings) cannot be tailor
made to fit all farms but involves
consideration of each individual’s
situation. The farmer (and those
working with him) must analyze
his problem to determine his costs
and returns for the farm as a whole
under alternative combinations of
crops, fertilization ancf supporting
conservation measures to determine
which system will best fit his capi
tal position and abilities and still
do the conservation job.
Contour cultivation, row manage
ment, and terracing are measures
designed to retard or prevent the
runoff of water and soil erosion.
These measures may be used indiv
idually or in combination.
Grass waterways help to remove
runoff without damage to the land.
In addition to reducing or prevent
ing soil and water losses, grass wat
erways, once established, make for
easier farm operation and a reduc
tion of production costs.
Designers have finally licked the
problem of the jammed zipper. A
push of a button on a recently
developed zipper puts it back into
operation again when it stalls on
thread or fabric. It will be on the
market this year.
There’s no short cut or easy way
to do a soil conservation job. Only
a complete-farm soil and water con
servation program will do the job,
the SCS points out.
