(Continued from Page One)
By M. C. Wiggins
Lanier High School won the
first Annual Tip-off Basketball
Tournament of Champions,
sponsored by the Jackson
State College Athletic Depart
ment, Friday and Saturday,
November 29-30.
Coach L. T. Smith explain
ed that this tournament was
the initial one of what is to be
an annual affair. He said in
his remarks to the students,
“This was a dream tourna
ment, which has been in the
making for years, and we hope
it will arouse more interest
as the years go by.”
The prize for the winners
was a massive trophy, measur
ing rfiore than three feet in
height. Although it Will be a
floating troDhv. going to the
winner each year, the first
school to win it three times
will become the sole owner.
In a special assembly Cap
tain Rudolph Williams presen
ted this coveted prize to Prin
cipal L. B. Buckley, wrho in
his acceptance speech, empha
sized the fact that this was a
tournament of champions. Mr.
Buckley further expressed his
apprecfation to the coaches
and team for bringing such
honor to Lanier High School.
To bring this elegant prize
to Lanier, it was necessary for
the Bulldogs to defeat Bogue
Chitto in their opening game.
This they did by a convincing
score of 63 to 46, with Clifton
Farrier and Captain Williams
emerging in a tie for top scor
ing honors with 19 points each.
The Bulldogs defeated the
arthage five, defending state
champions, 66 to 38, Farrier
scored 19 points for high point
honors.
In the finals the Lanier cag
ers had to conquer the stub
born Meridian Bearcats before
they could claim the title. Us
ing the control — the ball
strategy for the last minute of
the game, the Bulldogs were
able to outlast the Bearcats to
the score of 59 to 50.
Rudolph Williams centered
the net for 16 points for top
scoring honors.
Coach Smith, who has enjoy
ed an enviable record in bas
ketball at Lanier declares that
this the eighth major trophy
won by Lanier teams in their
colorful history of Basketball
competition. He mentioned
further that this is the fourth
time that Lanier has set a pre-'
cedent in winning laurels in
basketball.
