Leon Higginbot tom, Philadelphia, Pa., who flew to Chicago to represent the group Thursday when Tay lor’s supporters unsuccessfully sought an injunction against the board meeting, told board members that Taylor’s forces had filed an appeal to the U. S. Supreme Court. He requested that board action be taken to establish a legal committee to cope with similar emergen cies. The request was accept ed and adopted by the body. In other actions, Andrew Means of Gary. Ind., was elec ted as treasurer of the board and $2400 was approved for United Nations work. The group directed that letters be forwarded to Atty. James Sharp, Monroe, La., and Atty. General William P. Rogers commending their efforts to secure voting rights for Neg roes in Louisiana. Another let- ! ter was directed to Louisiana 1 state's attorney general, Jack Gremillion, soliciting his sup port in this move. During his annual report, Theodore Jones, auditor for the National Baptist Conven tion told the group that there is a $91,000 surplus in the Pas tor’s Retirement Fund. He also reported that the Sunday School Publishing Board made a $63,000 profit last year. Fol lowing an appeal by Dr. Jack son, the board agreed to com plete a $10,000 scholarship pro gram at Roosevelt University in Chicago. Funeral Rifes . .. (Continued from Page 1) the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Noel of that town. He received his early educa tion in the public schools of Holmes County and earned the bachelor of science de gree from Alcorn A. & M. College in 1911. He taught in the Ebenezer public schools for several years before enter ing governmental service as a railway postal clerk where he served proudly and well until his retirement in 1946. Mr. Noel was an active, civ ic, religious and fraternal lead er and participated fully in all aspects of community life. When he became a resident of Jackson he joined the Pearl St. AME Church in 1921. The deceased held many positions of leadership, and was the recipient of honors by religious and civic groups in recognition of his reputation for keen integrity and pro found concern for his fellow man. He was a Knight of Fhythian and a 32nd degree Mason. Positions of responsi bility included: Treasurer of the following organizations: Jackson Branch of the NAACP 15 years: State Conferences of the NAACP branches for 15 years; the Jackson Negro Chamber of Commerce; the Progressive Voters League and Secretary-treasurer of the National Alliance of Postal Employees for 25 years; in ad dition. he was a member of the Executive Board of the Nation al Alcorn A. & M. College Alumni Association for many years; a member of the Broth erhood Bible Class; the YMCA and was a consistent contribu tor to many community pro jects. Honors accorded him were as follows: The 1949 Omega Psi Phi Fraternity’s Citizen of the Year Award: the YMCA Service Certificate in 1949; the 1951 Social Action Achieve ment Award of Phi Beta Sig ma Fraternity and the 1960 Certificate of Honor by the Southwest Region of the NAACP in appreciation of the constant devotion and unfail ing support in the fight for freedom. At all times, he serv ed his community, his race and his family with the best of which he was capable. No greater tribute can be paid to any man. Mr. Noel wa sa resident of Jackson for 39 years.
