OUT OF THE HEART Scripture Lesson — Pro verbs 3:1-8; 4:20-23: Luke 6: 43-45 Print — Proverbs 3:1-8; 4: 20-23; Luke 6:43-45 MEMORY SELECTION — Keep thy heart with all dili gence; for out of it are the issues of life — (Proverbs 4:23). The heart here stands for the center of the moral being. Physically, the heart is the central organ of the body. Morally, it is the seat of consciousness. The moral con duct with its actions and pro ceedings are determined by the conditions of the heart. When the heart is pure then the life will be pure; but if * the heart is corrupt then the life and conduct will be cor rupt. Also, the heart here is likened to a fountain. The best manner in which to keep the heart is to allow the Lord to save and purify it, fill it with His love, claim it for His own and control the heart for His use and glory. THE REWARD OF A WISE AND DEVOUT LIFE: Today’s lesson provokes serious thought concerning our motives for living the de vout life. Some very good people have died young, in cluding Jesus Himself. Some notoriously wicked people live i ntr> r»1H a cro Thorofnro it i e possible for some people to suffer great disillusionment if they begin to obey God’s commandments with wrong motives in mind. If one truly loves God and keeps His commandments there is no doubt that such a person will have peace, However, this peace does not presuppose absence of conflict and strug gle. The mere fact of obeying God in the midst of wicked men will precipitate conflict. But the peace which is the reward is an inner peace. That is the peace that Christ Jesus gives and not as the wo~ld gives. So le us trust God for his wisdom and good ness in the journey of life. Let us acknowledge God and make our requests known to Him, He will direct our paths in righteousness for His name sake. In order to enjoy the reward of truly wise living we must unconditionally sur render to God. We cannot give some of our life, but all of it. God demands the whole of a man’s life, and when that is done He will smooth the path of that man. Now once again we could not mean God will remove stumbling stones, but we do mean God will strengthen a man to transform stumbling stones transform stumbling stones into stepping stones. AN EXHORTATION TO RIGHT LIVING: The heart is regarded in this Scripture as the controll ing center of the individual’s actions. If a person can keep his heart, if he can control the source of his emotion and aspirations, he has mastered the art of self-discipline and has insured his chances for rich and full living. This is how purity of heart is obtain ed, by learning to live accord ing to the will of God and accepting Him as the highest good in one’s life. There is an intimate relationship be tween health of mind and health of body. They know - ! now that ma.iy more human ailments stem out of emo tional conditions than was pre viously believed. A deep seat ed sense of guilt for success fully hidden wrong doing can become the eventual undoing of a person. Therefore it is sound modern medicine to keep God’s words in mind and give heed to them. This may be done by memorizing passages of Scripture. It may be done by daily reading and meditation upon Scripture. It may be done by regular sys tematic study of the Scrip tures as in Sunday School or Bible classes. Whatever means we might choose to keep God’s word in mind must be seriously attended to, This is vital protection for the Heart (the seat of life). JESUS EXHORTS US TO SINGLENESS OF HEART: Here Jesus is emphasizing the place which fruit bearing hold in determining genuine ness of character. Viewed from the outside it is diffi cult to determine just how genuine a person’s character or motives are, but the life of the individual is a good indication of what he is, If a person is good of heart and sincere in spirit his deeds will reflect the same, but if he is insincere and evil of heart uiai, 100, win reveal itself in the conduct of that individual. By the same token we are warned by Jesus that that which defiles £ person is the product of the heart. In other words, it is the motive or thought which springs from the heart that we are iudged by. That is why it is so essen tial that the heart be kept with all diligence, and kept in a pure state lest it become corrupt and defile the whole life of the individual. We can only bring forth the kind of fruit that our inner self pro duces. The most fearful en emy of our country is not ex ternal, It is no other country on the face of thh globe. Our | most fearful enemy is within. That is that potion of us which confesses a creed of democracy and practice dis crimination. It is that potion of us which confesses a creed | of brotherhood and practice caste. Jesus has only one word for this enemy — hyp- j ocrisy. That is why Jesus urges that we pay regular and frequent attention to our selves, and cultivate our hearts, for out of the heart the mouth speaketh. PRACTICAL POINTS ON THE LESSON: The heart in the Bible stands for the inner man, the center of the moral being, where the seat of afflictions lie, and the will originates. The inner heart regulates the outward life. For this reason God always looks upon the heart to see what its desires, ambitions and motives are, which determine all outward acts. It is possible that a per son may have desires in the heart which may not be car ried out by the acts of the hand, while on the other hand he may perform some acts through his hands which are not in his heart, but are a form or hypocritical deeds. Inward nature is manifested in outward conduct. A good tree brings forth good fruit and a corrupt tree brings forth corrupt fr ait. The moral fruit of a blind leader in the church will be corruption. All are known by their fruit. LOANS Signatures Real Estate Co-Signers Autos Come To r TILLMAN FINANCE CO. 126 So. Farish Street Phone FL 3-5285 JACKSON, MISS.
