CHRISTIAN PURITY.
Scripture Lesson — 1 Cor
inthians 5-7 Print — 1 Corin
thians 6:9-20.
MEMORY SELECTION -
Know ye not that your body
is the temple of the Holy
Ghost which is in you, which
ye have of God, . . . therefore
glorify God in your body.—(1
Corinthians 6:19-20).
God in the beginning crea
ted the entire man composed
of spirit, soul and body. In
the fall, the entire man, even,
spirit, soul and body, became
degenerated. In the redemp
tion of man, provision has
been made for the entire man.
Salvation comes by stages and
the redemption of the body
will come at the second com
ing of Christ. The body be
comes the temple of God’s
Spirit and constitutes the
outer man. The Holy Spirit
dwells inside Lie human spirit
and both dwell inside of man's
body which makes the body
or tenrmlp a dwpllinp nlarp fnr
both. The body should be
brought into conformity with
God’s Spirit, even as the spirit
submits to the leading of the
Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit
is purely spirit and does not
possess a body. Redeemed
must furnish a body through
which the Holy Spirit may
operate.
ONLY THE RIGHTEOUS
INHERIT THE KINGDOM OF
GOD:
Paul warned the Christians
at Corinth that if they con
tinued to live in the sins that
dominated their lives before
their conversion, they would
not inherit the Kingdom of
God. Unrighteous men would
have no part in God’s King
dom for there was not any
thing that they could do. It
was not hard to idenitfy these
men of unrighteousness, they
were known by the sins that
mastered their lives. These
vices or sins are numerated by
r-aui in our lexi. me list
looks like this: fornication,
idolatry, adultery, effeminacy,
homesexuality, thievery, cove
tousness, drunkeness, revile
ment and extortion. These are
lowest of vices and sins. They
portray the low moral stand
ards that existed in Corinth at
the time when Paul wrote this
letter. Such low morality was
certain to have its effects up
on the Christians. Paul knew
s this, but he pointed out to the
Christians that they were a
bove such sin and vices be
cause they had heard the gos
pel preached to them; and all
who accepted the gospel had
been elevated to a higher
place of life and living. Their
status was not the same as it
was before, the old man had
now become a new creation.
They were now to be led by
the Holy Spirit, and the Spirit
of God would give them what
it took to control themselves
and keep themselves from
falling prey to the sins of
their past which enslaved
them. They must keep them
selves fit to be called children
of God. Therefore, they had
better see to it that their
lives remained in Christ, for
only those who would abide in
Him and would do His will
would inherit the Kingdom of
God here on .earth, and in the
world to come.
THE SANCTITY OF THE
BODY:
In these verses Paul is talk
ing about the sanctity of the
body. The body for Paul was
to be caried for. It was not
to be abused or mis-handled.
Paul got the chance to point

' ’this out to the Corinthian
Christians when he gave his
point of view to them about
Christain liberty. It seemed
that some were of the opinion
that as Christians they could
* do anything they so desired.
- But Paul argued that this was
the wrong concept of Chris
- tian liberty. Christian liberty
f did not mean moral license.
f Paul goes on to say that as a
i Christian he could do any
* thing, but this did not say
1 that everything was good for
him to do, and by all means
- he must not become the slave
l of anything. The body for
i. Paul was the handiwork of
, God. Through the body God
> can and does reveal Himself
■ to the world.
> If the Christian is to do
this he must observe and obey
L all of the laws of health, so
r that he will be able to serve
* more effectively the cause to
which God has chosen him.
> The church must commit her
1 self anew to the task of tell
ing men in this corrupt and
immoral society in which we
live, that God has created all
men and given them the body
that they have. He did not
give them the body to become
instruments of sin and vice.
God gave the body that it
might be used for His glory.
Certainly Christians know
they are to live a pure life.
They must lay aside even the
smallest sin, for even little
sins defile the body.
PRACTICAL POINTS ON
THE LESSON:
Our lesson today deals with
Christian purity. Along with
the problem of divisions in
^he Church at Corinth there
was also the problem of sexual
immorality. Morality in our
society today is so low and
IaaCA nr/v n«*/> m/n
off than were the people in
Corinth when Paul wrote
these words. All phases of
our lives are absolutely rot
ten with sin and vice. There
are all kinds of loose living
and what is so bad, society
(in many instances) condones
such things. Such low moral
standards are even invading
our churches, and Christians
are so much a victim of such
that they have the nerve to
say with this ungodly society
that there is nothing so mor
ally wrong with man that a
better house, a better job, a
better education, and more
recreational facilities won’t
help him.
At this point our lesson
speaks to us today. Christians
are to change pagans into
Christians. They are to be the
salt of the earth and the light
of the world. The only way
they can do this is to live
lives of purity; and abstain
from those sins that defile the
body, and rid unfit to be call
ed the temple of God. Chris
tian purity requires self-con
trol. God alone can give us the
power to do this.
