ONE IN A HUNDRED. The present campaign is one in a hundred for the Democrats of Attala. Rarely if ever before have they had candidates of such stal wart Democracy and unquestioned ability. They are a 'fine a lot from which to choose. We notice that one result of this is that our people find it difficult to choose between the candidates. We know scores of men that have not yet made up their minds as to whom they will vote for; and this is an omen that the party is sure to be satisfied with the ticket when nominated. Another thing! The calibre of our candidates is such that defeat for the nomination will not make tlu-m one whit less strong in their support of the ticket. Immedi ately after the primary election wc suppose the party will proceed to the organization of Democratic clubs throughout the county; and we'll venture to say that the de feated candidates will be among the. first to enroll their names. That is genuine Democracy. OFF THEIR BASE. Word comes to us that the Pop ulates are sedulously spreading the idea that there is a split in the Democracy of this county over the silver question, and they affect to see in this division a chance for themselves. It requires no state ment from Tin: Star to show that the Po ppies are completely off their base. We wiil tell the latter con fidentially that it is a bad idea to trust to a division, anyway. Old Pharaoh once trusted to a division of the waters and went between the two parts just as the Poppies are endeavoring to enter between the two wings of the Democracy; and when the sea came together his army was swallowed up. The man or the party that attempts to divide the Democracy of this coun ty is going to get hurt. We have our own little family quarrels, it 13 true; but wc are a unit when we face the foe. The property owner of Koscius ko whose rents fall off $ lo a month loses the annual interest on $1200 at ten per cent. If that is what he makes now on his investment, his property has really depreciated about $1,200 in value. There is a humorist who does not intend to practice mendacity, even in fun; but somehow or other or some how else, he will tell his auditors something amusing about his travels in the Lone Star State, where he lived several years. The whiteness of bis name (Snow) rep resents the purity of his humor; the coolness of it represents his in different disposition to hilarity. One of his stories runs similar to this: I was riding along through the prairie once, on a journey of several days' ride. Water in that part of Texas was very scarce. I drew rein at the base of a slight elevation of land, in any direction forming a basin, which held the only water I had seen for some time. My mustang was thirsty and so was I. If it had been in Mississippi I could not have drank the stagnant water, alive with cu rious insects. Well, I readied the aforesaid place about sundown. I staked the mustang and glanced around, as it were, to take in the "lay of the land." A cabin stood on the hill about a mile away; an old-fashioned wash-pot 'with a few sticks around was near the pond. By this time I was sleepy and. wrapping my blanket around me, fell upon the long grass to sleep. Now don't believe all of it; but the musquitces were so bad I couldn't rest. It se lined they would anni hilate or carry me off. What should I do but crouch down on my marrow bone and turn the pot over my humble form. I fell asleep, remaining unconscious until something began to penetrate my back. 1 turned over, and mus quito bills to infinity were still af ter me. I took out my knife and began to brad the assailants' bills on the inside. Just as the last brad was made on my indomitable, blood-thirsty comrades, and as the sun was rising in the eastern skies, the rnusquitoes spread their wings and soared away with the pot. The course in Physics is espe cially good; for here we have all the apparatus for experiments, which are such a benefit and help to the memory. If we had only a few simple apparatus in our public schools numberle s experiments might be performed and the prin ciples indelibly stamped up'on the mind of the child. It is in the primary work draw ing and physical culture that we continue to see harder work, great er earnestness, and larger crowds. All are interested in these, which shows so plainly that the primary is the work of the day in public schools. Prof. Rose's talks are inspiring and elevate the teacher, which is the great object of education. El- pvotn nnil refine till' vnntb of a ronntrv. and von elevate, raise to a high standard, that country men- tallv. morally, politically. By education a child is transported from the sensual animal life to the higher, sensuous life; from a state of dependence to independence. There is so much to be learned on every subject that the teachers devote all their time and atten tion to special subjects. There are more things to be learned than ever dreamt of by those who are not in attendance. ' Miss Ei.i.kn Pun.Mfv, Miss Ikknt. Flktchku, Committee.
